There is no single yes-or-no answer that holds for more than a few hours, because the Jvari Pass (sometimes called the Gudauri Pass) on the Georgian Military Highway closes and reopens repeatedly through the winter depending on snow, wind and avalanche risk. The only reliable way to know the status for today, 27 October 2026, is to check the real-time feed from Georgia’s Roads Department, which we mirror hourly at gtour.ge/road-status.
The nuance is that “closed” rarely means closed for the whole day. The road is usually shut for short windows, often two to six hours, while snow ploughs and avalanche teams clear the pass, then reopened under escort or with chain restrictions. Late October is early in the closure season, so short, isolated closures are more likely than the multi-day shutdowns typical of January and February.
How to check right now
The Roads Department of Georgia publishes live road conditions, including the Jvari Pass segment of the Georgian Military Highway, with updates through the day. Check georoad.gov.ge directly, or use our hourly mirror at gtour.ge/road-status, which pulls the same feed and is easier to read on a phone at a petrol station in Pasanauri. Georgian police and the Roads Department also post updates on closures via their official channels; if you read Georgian, local radio in Stepantsminda often repeats the same information faster than the website updates.
Typical winter closure pattern
From roughly mid-November through April, expect the Jvari Pass to close for some part of most weeks, with the heaviest disruption from January to March. The pattern below is a general guide, not a schedule; always verify with the live feed.
- Late October to mid-November: occasional short closures after fresh snow, usually cleared within hours.
- December to February: closures of half a day to two days are common after storms; the road may be shut overnight for avalanche control work even in clear weather.
- March to April: closures become less frequent but can still happen after late-season snowfalls.
- May to October: the pass is normally open, though rockfall or roadworks can still cause brief stoppages.

Chains, trailers and vehicle rules
When snow is forecast, the Roads Department commonly requires winter tyres or snow chains above Gudauri, and may restrict or ban trucks, trailers and caravans on the steepest switchbacks. These restrictions change by the hour depending on conditions, so do not assume last week’s rule still applies. If you are driving yourself, carry chains from November onward even if you do not expect to need them, and confirm current vehicle restrictions on georoad.gov.ge before you leave Tbilisi.
What to do if the pass is closed
If you are heading north from Tbilisi and the pass closes ahead of you, the sensible options are to wait in Gudauri, which has hotels, cafés and ski infrastructure, or to push on to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi town) if the closure point is beyond it and you are already close. Queuing directly at the barrier in a private car is usually unnecessary and uncomfortable; most drivers who know the road wait in a warm café and watch the feed. A driver booked through a local operator will generally have better real-time information than a self-drive visitor, since local companies are in contact with the Roads Department and with each other.
| Situation | Suggested move |
|---|---|
| Closure announced before you leave Tbilisi | Delay departure by a few hours, recheck the feed |
| Closure happens while you are in Gudauri | Stay in Gudauri, most closures clear within hours |
| Closure happens past Gudauri, near Kazbegi | Continue to Stepantsminda and wait there |
| Multi-day closure in deep winter | Consider postponing or switching to another region |

Alternatives if you cannot wait
If your schedule cannot absorb a delay, consider routing your trip so Kazbegi is not the only mountain day. Kakheti‘s wine country to the east is unaffected by Jvari Pass closures and pairs well with a shortened itinerary; see our Kakheti Wine Country Day Trip or Telavi & Kakheti Wine Region guides. For a winter-specific plan that already builds in flexibility around Gudauri’s ski season, our Georgia in Winter — Gudauri Skiing, Tbilisi & Kakheti (6 Days) tour is designed with buffer days. If you are driving with a private driver, ask them to monitor the Roads Department feed from the morning of departure rather than the night before, since conditions on this pass can change quickly.
Where this comes from
This guidance is based on the live road-status feed published by the Roads Department of Georgia at georoad.gov.ge, which GTour mirrors hourly at gtour.ge/road-status, together with GTour’s own operational experience running winter transfers to Gudauri and Kazbegi. Because closure rules, chain requirements and vehicle restrictions can change within the same day, always confirm against the official feed before travelling; checked 27 October 2026.
