Georgia is a small country on the map, but mountain roads and winding valleys mean distances take longer than they look. The right length of trip depends on how much driving you are willing to do and whether you want to reach Svaneti or the Black Sea coast. Below are three realistic itineraries, built around actual road times, for travelers arriving in Tbilisi.
5 Days: The Essentials
Five days is enough to see Tbilisi properly and take two of the country’s best day trips. This is the most common itinerary for first-time visitors with limited time.
- Day 1-2: Tbilisi. Old Town, Narikala Fortress, sulfur baths, Rike Park, and at least one evening exploring the wine bars and restaurants of Vera or Sololaki.
- Day 3: Mtskheta (half day) and Kazbegi (day trip). Mtskheta, Georgia’s ancient capital, sits about 20 minutes from Tbilisi and can be combined with the drive north. Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) is roughly 3 hours from Tbilisi along the Georgian Military Highway, with stops at Ananuri fortress and the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument. This makes for a long but rewarding single day, including the short hike or jeep ride up to Gergeti Trinity Church.
- Day 4: Kakheti (day trip). Georgia’s main wine region is about 2 hours from Tbilisi. A typical day covers Telavi, Sighnaghi, and one or two wineries or family cellars for tastings.
- Day 5: Tbilisi departure or a slower morning before an afternoon flight, with time for the Dry Bridge market or a final look at the Old Town.
This itinerary involves two long but manageable day trips. Travelers who prefer not to drive themselves can book a private driver or join a small-group tour for both routes; see available tours from Tbilisi.
7 Days: Add Western Georgia or Extra Mountain Time
With two extra days, there are two good directions to add to the 5-day plan: west toward Kutaisi and Imereti, or further north with an overnight stay in Kazbegi instead of a rushed day trip.
Option A: Kutaisi and the Imereti caves
- Tbilisi to Kutaisi takes about 3 hours by road (a similar time by train).
- Highlights near Kutaisi include Prometheus Cave, a large illuminated cave system with underground walkways, and Martvili Canyon, known for turquoise water and a short boat ride.
- Gelati Monastery and Bagrati Cathedral, both near Kutaisi, add historical depth to the stop.
- Plan on one night in Kutaisi, or two if combining both caves with a relaxed pace.
Option B: Two nights in Kazbegi
Instead of a single long day trip, staying two nights in Kazbegi allows for a proper hike to Gergeti Glacier or into the Juta valley, without the pressure of returning to Tbilisi the same evening. This suits travelers who prefer mountain scenery over museums and wine cellars.
Either option works well tagged onto the 5-day core itinerary above, and both are commonly offered as multi-day packages; check GTour’s tour listings for current departures.
10 Days: Reaching Svaneti or the Coast
Ten days opens up Georgia’s most dramatic mountain region, Svaneti, or a relaxed stretch on the Black Sea coast at Batumi. Both require real commitment in travel time, so pick one rather than attempting both.
Svaneti: Mestia and Ushguli
- The standard route runs Tbilisi to Zugdidi (by overnight train or by road), then Zugdidi to Mestia, about 3 hours on a paved but winding mountain road. A domestic flight from Tbilisi to Mestia also operates on a limited schedule, weather permitting.
- From Mestia, the road to Ushguli, one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in Europe, takes about 2 hours each way and is rough and unpaved for long stretches; a 4×4 or experienced driver is standard practice.
- Allow at least 3-4 days total for Svaneti once travel time in both directions is included: a realistic plan is one night en route, two nights in Mestia, and a long day trip to Ushguli.
- Towers, glaciers, and hiking trails around Mestia (including routes toward Ushguli on foot for multi-day trekkers) are the main draws.
Batumi and the coast
- Batumi is 5-6 hours from Tbilisi by road, or about 5 hours by train, making it a full travel day in each direction.
- The city offers a seafront boulevard, botanical garden, and a noticeably different, subtropical atmosphere from the rest of Georgia, plus easy access to Adjara’s mountain villages.
- Two to three nights is a sensible minimum to justify the travel time.
A note on Svaneti and Tusheti
Tusheti, Georgia’s other famous mountain region, lies in the opposite direction from Svaneti and is reached by a difficult road open only in summer. Combining Svaneti and Tusheti in one short trip is not realistic given the driving distances and road conditions between them; choose one per visit unless the trip is three weeks or longer.
Planning Notes
- Road conditions in mountain regions depend heavily on season; the Mestia-Ushguli road and the Tusheti road can close after heavy rain or early snow.
- Self-driving is possible on all routes mentioned except the roughest stretches near Ushguli, where many visitors prefer a local driver.
- Private tours and transfers covering Kazbegi, Kakheti, Kutaisi, and Svaneti are available for travelers who prefer not to arrange logistics themselves; see GTour’s tour offerings for itineraries and departure details.
- Always check current road and flight conditions with official sources before finalizing a Svaneti or Tusheti itinerary.
Quick answers
Is 5 days enough for Georgia? Yes, for Tbilisi plus Kazbegi and Kakheti day trips, though it will feel busy.
How many days do I need for Svaneti? Budget at least 3-4 days including travel from Tbilisi, given the Zugdidi-Mestia and Mestia-Ushguli drive times.
Can I visit Svaneti and Tusheti in one trip? Not comfortably on a short trip; they are in opposite directions with long, rough roads, so most visitors choose one.
Is it better to add Kutaisi or Batumi on a 7-10 day trip? Kutaisi suits a 7-day trip due to its shorter distance from Tbilisi; Batumi needs 10 days or more because of the longer round trip.
Do I need a 4×4 for Svaneti? A regular car is fine for Zugdidi to Mestia; the onward road to Ushguli is rough and usually done with a 4×4 or local driver.
