Trains in Georgia: Tbilisi–Batumi Stadler, Tbilisi–Zugdidi night train, Kutaisi, tickets and classes

Georgia’s passenger railway is small but genuinely useful: a fast, comfortable Stadler service links Tbilisi and Batumi in roughly five hours, a nightly sleeper runs from Tbilisi to Zugdidi for travellers heading on to Svaneti, and a handful of trains touch Kutaisi on the same western line. Tickets are bought on the Georgian Railway website or app at railway.ge, you need a passport number for every passenger at the time of booking, and the same document is checked when you board. Classes range from first and business seating on the day trains to deluxe twin cabins and shared compartments on the night train.

International services to Yerevan and Baku exist on paper but have a history of interruption, so treat them as provisional until you have confirmed the current timetable directly on railway.ge. Below is a plain, conservative guide to the routes, the booking process, and what to expect in each class, written so it stays accurate as fares and timetables shift.

The routes that matter

Georgian Railway’s passenger network for travellers is built around one main electrified trunk line running from Tbilisi west through Khashuri, Zestaponi, Rioni (the junction for Kutaisi) and Samtredia, with branches to Batumi on the coast and to Zugdidi further north-west. There is no passenger line into the high mountains, so trains cannot reach Kazbegi, Svaneti towns themselves, Kakheti or Tusheti; for those, road transfers remain the only option, which is why most of our own Mestia to Kutaisi or Zugdidi Transfer and Tbilisi to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) itineraries run by car.

Timetables change with the season and with track maintenance, so always confirm exact departure times on railway.ge before building a schedule around them.

Tbilisi–Batumi: the Stadler day train

The Swiss-built Stadler electric trainsets are the most comfortable way to cover the roughly 370 kilometres between the capital and the Black Sea coast without driving. Carriages are air-conditioned, seats recline, and sockets are generally available at or near every row; a buffet or trolley service is normal. The ride is pleasant rather than scenic for long stretches, since the line runs through the Imereti lowlands rather than along the coast, and the final approach to Batumi only reveals the sea in the last few minutes.

For a traveller comparing options, the train suits those without heavy luggage who want to read, work or sleep for five hours at a fixed low fare. A private transfer is faster door to door and lets you stop at Surami or Kutaisi en route; see our Tbilisi to Batumi – Private Transfer, 6 Hours with Stops for that alternative, or our Batumi Half-Day and Batumi Old Town and Boulevard Walk once you arrive.

Classes on the Stadler trains

• First class: wider seats, more legroom, usually two-plus-one seating and at-seat refreshment.
• Business class: a step above standard economy, with slightly better seating and sometimes a quieter carriage.
• Economy/standard: perfectly comfortable airline-style seating, the default choice for most travellers and the cheapest fare band.

Fares differ by class and are shown at the time of booking on railway.ge; they are modest by European standards but do rise closer to departure and on peak weekends, so book a few days ahead if your dates are fixed.

The Tbilisi–Zugdidi night train and getting on to Svaneti

The overnight train to Zugdidi is the classic budget route into Svaneti. It leaves Tbilisi in the evening and reaches Zugdidi in the early morning, after which Mestia is a further two and a half to three hours by shared marshrutka or taxi over a winding mountain road; there is no rail link beyond Zugdidi. Three onboard options exist: a two-berth deluxe compartment with its own basic amenities, a standard four-berth shared compartment (kupe-style, bedding usually included or available for a small fee), and a seated carriage for those who prefer not to lie down. Compartments are mixed-gender unless you book out all the berths, so solo travellers who want privacy should pay for the deluxe cabin or book all four berths in a standard one.

Because the overnight connection to Zugdidi then requires a further road journey, many of our clients instead book a direct private transfer that covers the whole distance from Tbilisi or Kutaisi to Mestia in one controlled trip with stops; see our Tbilisi or Kutaisi to Mestia — Private 4×4 Transfer, or combine the night train with our pre-arranged pickup on our Mestia to Kutaisi or Zugdidi Transfer page. If you do take the train and want to see Zugdidi itself before heading on, our Zugdidi, Dadiani Palace and the Enguri Dam day trip covers the town’s main sight, the Dadiani family palace and museum.

Kutaisi by rail

Kutaisi sits on the same western line but is served by fewer daily trains than Batumi, and its station is a short distance from the historic centre, so factor in a taxi at either end. For most visitors flying into or out of Kutaisi International Airport, a private transfer remains more practical than the train, since airport connections do not run on rail; see our Kutaisi Airport to Batumi — Private Transfer and Kutaisi Airport to Tbilisi — Private Transfer. Once in town, our Kutaisi Walking Tour and Kutaisi Half-Day cover Bagrati Cathedral, the Green Bazaar and the Rioni riverbanks.

How to buy tickets: railway.ge, the app, and the passport rule

Tickets for all domestic and international Georgian Railway services are sold through the official website and the official mobile app, both reachable from railway.ge, as well as at station ticket counters. Three points matter for first-time users:

• Passport details are required at booking. Every passenger’s full name and passport (or national ID) number must match the ticket exactly, and conductors check this document when you board, so each traveller needs their own ticket tied to their own passport, not a shared booking.
• Book popular dates ahead. Summer weekends, the Batumi route in high season, and the Zugdidi night train around festivals can sell out, particularly in the deluxe night-train cabins.
• Carry a printed or digital copy and the passport itself. A screenshot of the e-ticket is normally accepted, but the physical passport used at booking is the document checked on board, so a photocopy is not sufficient.

Georgian Railway’s own site is the only authoritative source for current fares and seat availability; third-party resellers exist but we recommend the official channel for accuracy and for straightforward refunds if your plans change.

International trains to Yerevan and Baku

Historic rail links connect Tbilisi with Yerevan and with Baku, and sleeper services have operated on both routes in recent years, with the Baku train involving a border stop for passport and customs checks. These are long, slow journeys compared with flying or driving, and both routes have been affected at times by scheduling changes, so we deliberately avoid quoting a fixed frequency here. Before planning around either service, confirm the current timetable directly on railway.ge, and check recent reporting on Agenda.ge, Civil.ge or Georgia Today’s travel section for any disruption. Entry requirements into Armenia or Azerbaijan are separate from Georgia’s own rules and should be checked with those countries’ consulates; for Georgia’s own entry and visa conditions, see evisa.gov.ge, and for general travel safety guidance consult Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Comfort, luggage and practical notes

• Luggage racks on the Stadler trains suit one large case and a daypack per seat; there is no strict weight limit, but very large items are awkward in the aisles.
• Food and drink are available from a trolley or small buffet on the day trains; the night train has more limited options, so bring water and snacks.
• Mobile signal is generally reliable along the Tbilisi–Batumi corridor; wifi, where offered, can be patchy in rural stretches.
• Stations have basic facilities; Tbilisi’s central station is the main hub for all these services.
• Families travelling with small children often prefer the deluxe night-train cabin for the extra space and lockable door.

Practical summary

• Buy tickets on railway.ge or the official app; each passenger needs their own ticket matched to their passport, checked again on board.
• Tbilisi–Batumi: Stadler day trains, about 5 to 5.5 hours, first, business and economy classes, several daily departures.
• Tbilisi–Zugdidi: one overnight train each way, about 5 to 6 hours, deluxe twin cabin, 4-berth compartment or seated carriage; Mestia is a further 2.5 to 3 hours by road from Zugdidi.
• Kutaisi has fewer direct trains than Batumi; a taxi or private transfer covers the airport and old town connections.
• Tbilisi–Yerevan and Tbilisi–Baku trains exist but change schedule periodically; confirm on railway.ge and recent Georgian press before relying on them.
• For mountain destinations such as Kazbegi, Tusheti, Svaneti towns and Kakheti, there is no rail option; book a private transfer or guided tour instead.
