The 15 most beautiful villages in Georgia: Ushguli, Shatili, Dartlo, Omalo, Adishi, Juta, Sighnaghi and more

The honest shortlist is Ushguli, Chazhashi and Adishi in Upper Svaneti, Mazeri below Ushba, Shatili and Mutso in Khevsureti, Omalo, Dartlo, Diklo and Parsma in Tusheti, Juta, Sno and Roshka near Kazbegi, Ghebi in Racha, and Sighnaghi in Kakheti. Together they cover Georgia’s four classic landscapes — Svan defensive towers, Khevsureti’s stone fortress-villages, Tusheti’s summer-only timber hamlets, and Kakheti’s painted hill town — and between them they need a 4×4, patience with weather, and, in three cases, an entire summer season to see at all.

Several of these places are genuinely nine or ten centuries old; others look ancient but were rebuilt, in parts quite recently, after earthquakes, depopulation or Soviet-era abandonment. Road and shelter conditions change year to year, so treat every opening date, pass status and guesthouse name below as a starting point to verify locally or through the Georgian Road Department before you drive, not a guarantee.

The fifteen villages at a glance

Upper Svaneti: Ushguli, Chazhashi, Adishi, Mazeri

Ushguli, at around 2,100 metres, is usually described as one of the highest permanently inhabited settlements in Europe, though that claim is disputed between several villages across the Caucasus and the Alps and is worth treating as folklore rather than fact. What is documented is that Ushguli’s stone Svan towers, built mainly for defence and refuge between the ninth and thirteenth centuries, form part of the Upper Svaneti property inscribed by UNESCO, where the core protected hamlet is Chazhashi rather than Ushguli as a whole. Many towers you see today have been re-roofed or repointed, and some roofs changed from slate to tin during the Soviet period before slate was restored; ask at the small Ethnographic Museum in Chazhashi which towers are original fabric. Adishi, a half-day drive or a scenic two-day trek from Ushguli over the Chkhutnieri pass, has fewer tourists and a working glacier crossing used by trekkers heading toward Mestia; conditions on that route change yearly and should be checked with a local guide before setting out. Mazeri, under the north face of Ushba, is lower, greener and open longer into autumn, with simple guesthouses rather than towers as the draw. GTour’s Mestia & Ushguli — 3 Days in Svaneti covers Ushguli and the Mestia towers with a 4×4 included, which is the realistic way to see all three villages in one trip.

Khevsureti and Tusheti: Shatili, Mutso, Omalo, Dartlo, Diklo, Parsma

Shatili is a cluster of stone fortress-houses stacked against a hillside above the Argun gorge, close to the Chechen border; the compact, windowless construction is real medieval defensive architecture, though a number of houses were reinforced and some roofs replaced after decades of partial abandonment under Soviet resettlement policies. Mutso, further along a rough track, is a semi-ruined fortress village undergoing slow, partial restoration; parts are unsafe to enter and marked accordingly, so follow any fencing or guide instructions rather than climbing freely. Tusheti is a different proposition entirely: the only road in crosses the Abano Pass above 2,900 metres and is officially open for a few months each year, typically opening in late May or June and closing with the first heavy snow in October, a window the Georgian Road Department publishes updates on each season. Once there, Omalo is the administrative base with the most guesthouses, Dartlo is the best-preserved stone-and-wood hamlet with watchtowers largely intact, Diklo sits close to the border zone with dramatic cliff-edge houses, and Parsma is smaller and quieter, reachable on foot or by the same rough tracks. None of Tusheti’s villages have year-round residents in winter; families return to the lowlands, which is central to understanding why these places feel so intact — they are lived in seasonally, not preserved as museums. GTour’s Tusheti — Georgia’s Last Wild Frontier (4 Days) is built around the Abano Pass window and covers Omalo, Dartlo and Diklo.

Kazbegi and Racha: Juta, Sno, Roshka, Ghebi

Juta, below the Chaukhi massif, is a small trekking hub rather than a historic settlement in the Svan or Khevsureti sense, but its setting — a scatter of stone houses under jagged granite peaks, with the trailhead for Chaukhi Lake and the Juta-to-Roshka crossing — makes it one of the most photographed villages near Kazbegi. Sno, a short detour off the Georgian Military Highway, has a reconstructed watchtower and is often combined with Gergeti Trinity Church on a day out from Tbilisi; most of what stands today, including the tower, has been rebuilt rather than original fabric, and local guides are generally open about this. Roshka, reached either by a long drive or the multi-day trek from Juta, sits at the edge of Khevsureti and is the quietest of the three. Ghebi, in upper Racha, is less visited than any village on this list; its wooden houses and surrounding beech forest suit travellers who want scenery without crowds, and it pairs naturally with a wine stop lower in the valley. GTour’s Kazbegi — 2-Day Mountain Journey reaches Sno and Gergeti; the Racha — Khvanchkara Wine & Mountain Lakes (2 Days) tour covers the Ghebi side of the region.

Sighnaghi: Kakheti’s painted hill town

Sighnaghi is technically a small town rather than a village, but it is routinely included on this kind of list for its pastel balconied houses, cobbled lanes and the 18th-century fortress wall that rings the hilltop, with sweeping views over the Alazani Valley toward the Caucasus. Much of the old town’s painted facades and the wall itself were restored during a government renovation programme in the 2000s, which is worth saying plainly rather than presenting the town as untouched — the bones are historic, the finish is largely new. It is also one of the few places on this list reachable in a single day from Tbilisi on sealed roads, year-round. GTour’s Sighnaghi & Bodbe — Wine Country Day Trip and the longer Kakheti Grand Wine & Heritage — 3 Days both include it.

What’s authentic and what has been restored

• Chazhashi in Ushguli: core fabric genuinely medieval, protected under the UNESCO-listed Upper Svaneti property; several roofs replaced over the 20th century.
• Shatili: original stone construction, with reinforcement and selective rebuilding after Soviet-era depopulation.
• Mutso: largely ruined, under slow partial restoration; treat closed sections as closed.
• Dartlo and Diklo: substantially intact Tusheti stonework, maintained by families who still summer there.
• Sno’s watchtower: a modern reconstruction on an old site, not original fabric.
• Sighnaghi: historic street plan and fortress line, but most visible facades and the wall date to a 2000s restoration.

Where a monument’s protection status or restoration history matters to you, Georgia’s National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation keeps records that are worth checking before you travel.

When to go, how to reach each, where to sleep

Svaneti and Khevsureti villages are reachable from roughly June through September, with Mazeri and Sighnaghi usable later into autumn. Tusheti has the shortest window of all: the Abano Pass road is seasonal and unpaved, and self-driving it without local experience is not advisable even with a rented 4×4, given narrow sections and drop-offs. For Ushguli, Shatili, Mutso and Tusheti, GTour’s car-with-driver service requires a 4×4 (Toyota Land Cruiser or Prado class) at €220 per day around Tbilisi or €230 per day on multi-day touring, which covers fuel, tolls and the driver’s accommodation. A direct transfer from Kutaisi airport to Mestia runs €390 per car, useful if you are starting a Svaneti trip by air rather than from Tbilisi. Accommodation everywhere on this list is guesthouse-level rather than hotel-level: family rooms with shared bathrooms are standard in Ushguli, Dartlo and Omalo, and booking ahead in July and August matters, since beds are limited and fill with independent trekkers. GTour can recommend and book guesthouses for a flat €15 service fee per reservation, or arrange the whole route — hotels, 4×4 and guide — on one invoice with no separate booking fee, which is usually simpler for Tusheti and Khevsureti given how few beds exist per village.
