How do you get to Vardzia and is it worth the trip?

Vardzia sits about 235 km south of Tbilisi in Samtskhe-Javakheti, and getting there means a 4 to 4.5 hour private or self-drive journey through Borjomi and Akhaltsikhe — there is no railway and no direct bus, so most travellers go by car, with a change of minibus in Akhaltsikhe if going by public transport. As of 27 October 2026, this remains the only practical way in.

Whether it is worth the distance depends on what you want from a day in Georgia’s south. Vardzia is a cave monastery cut into a cliff face in the 1180s under Queen Tamar, with hundreds of rooms, a church with surviving frescoes, and a long tunnel system — it rewards a full day, not a quick stop. The nuance is logistics: opening hours shorten in winter, parts of the upper galleries are sometimes closed for conservation, and the round trip is long enough that most visitors fold it into Borjomi and the Rabati Fortress in Akhaltsikhe rather than driving there and back alone.

Routes and driving times

The standard route from Tbilisi runs through Borjomi and Akhaltsikhe. Road conditions on this stretch are generally good and paved, though the final approach into the Mtkvari gorge narrows. Current road status can be checked on our road status page before departure.

From Kutaisi the drive is shorter, roughly 3 to 3.5 hours via Borjomi, though exact timing depends on season and the Rikoti Pass traffic; confirm current conditions at Georgian Road Department.

Combining with Borjomi and Rabati

Because the drive is long, almost every visitor pairs Vardzia with at least one other stop. A sensible order from Tbilisi is Borjomi (a walk in the park, a taste of the mineral water) in the morning, Rabati Fortress in Akhaltsikhe at midday, then Vardzia in the afternoon when the cliff faces catch better light. Doing all three in one day from Tbilisi makes for a long day — 12 to 13 hours door to door — which is why we also run it as a two-day version with an overnight in Akhaltsikhe or Borjomi.

• Vardzia Cave City — Day Trip (12 hours), Vardzia only, for those based in Tbilisi with no interest in the detour stops.
• Vardzia and Rabati — the Long Day South (13 hours), both sites in one long day.
• Vardzia, Rabati & Borjomi — 2 Days, an overnight that removes the rush.
• The South in 3 Days — Borjomi, Vardzia, Rabati and Abastumani, for a fuller regional loop with a spa stop.

Current per-person pricing for each of these, by group size, is listed at gtour.ge/data.

Opening hours and tickets

The National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia manages access to Vardzia and publishes seasonal hours and ticket information. As a general pattern, the site opens later and closes earlier in winter, with last entry typically an hour before closing, and some passages may be roped off for conservation work at any time of year. Because these details are updated seasonally and prices can change, check the current hours and ticket price directly with the agency before you travel: National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia.

• Expect roughly two to three hours on site to see the main cave complex and church properly.
• Comfortable shoes matter — stone steps and uneven passages throughout.
• Photography inside the church may be restricted; follow posted signage on the day.

Is it worth the trip

For anyone with an interest in medieval Georgian history or cave architecture, yes. Vardzia is unusual even by the country’s standards of rock-cut monasteries — at its height it held more than 400 rooms across multiple levels, including a throne hall, a refectory, and the Church of the Dormition with frescoes that include a contemporary portrait of Queen Tamar. The surrounding Mtkvari valley and the semi-arid hills above it are also worth the drive on their own terms, a different landscape from Tbilisi or the Caucasus. The honest caveat is distance: if time is very limited, Mtskheta or Uplistsikhe offer cave and church history closer to the capital. Vardzia is for travellers who can give it a full day or more.

Our tour

We run Vardzia as a day trip, as a combined day with Rabati, and as a two or three day loop with Borjomi and Abastumani built in, with private transport and a driver throughout. Group size changes the per-person price noticeably — solo travel on the Vardzia Cave City — Day Trip costs more per person than travelling as a pair or small group, as shown on our pricing page. For a private guide or a day’s car hire on your own route through this region, see our Car with Driver by the Day and Licensed Private Guide by the Day options, both listed at gtour.ge/data.
