Samegrelo is the lowland region of western Georgia between the Black Sea coast and the foothills of Svaneti, and its capital, Zugdidi, is where most visitors first meet it: as a stop between Kutaisi or Batumi and the mountain road to Mestia. The region’s own reasons to stop are substantial on their own terms — a Romanov-era palace built by the Dadiani princely family with a genuine death mask of Napoleon, the fortified late-antique capital of Nokalakevi, the limestone slot of Martvili Canyon and its neighbour Okatse, and a cuisine built around maize, walnuts and soft cheese that is distinct from anything served in Tbilisi or Kakheti.
This guide sets out what each site actually involves, what it costs to see, how long to allow, and how to fit Samegrelo into a route that continues to Svaneti or the sea, with the caveat that opening hours and small entrance fees at regional museums and parks change more often than headline prices, so always check the official page linked before you travel.
Zugdidi and the Dadiani Palace
Zugdidi is a modest regional town built around a 19th-century park and the former residence of the Dadiani family, who ruled Samegrelo (Mingrelia) as a semi-autonomous principality until the Russian annexation of the mid-19th century. The palace complex, now run as a branch of the Georgian National Museum network, mixes a European-style residence with a botanical park, and its small museum holds the collection’s genuine curiosity: a bronze death mask of Napoleon Bonaparte, which reached Zugdidi through the marriage of a Dadiani prince to a niece of the French emperor’s family. Alongside it sit royal portraits, imported French furniture, archaeological finds from the region including Colchian gold, and a modest natural history cabinet. Allow 60 to 90 minutes for the museum and park together; a licensed guide adds useful context on the Dadiani dynasty that the labelling alone does not cover. GTOUR runs this as a half-day combination with the Enguri Dam on the Zugdidi, Dadiani Palace and the Enguri Dam day trip, priced at €312 solo or €166 each for four to six people, from Kutaisi.
Nokalakevi: Archaeopolis
Around 45 minutes east of Zugdidi, the village of Nokalakevi sits on the site the Byzantines called Archaeopolis, a fortified city mentioned by Procopius as a Lazic stronghold contested between Byzantium and Persia in the 6th century. Excavations, carried out for decades by a joint Georgian-British team, have exposed city walls, a bishop’s basilica, bath complexes and a citadel climbing the hillside above the Tekhuri river, with finds spanning the pre-Christian to medieval periods. The site is managed as a protected archaeological monument, and its status and ongoing conservation work are documented by Georgia’s heritage authorities; current access, opening times and any entry fee are best checked directly with the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia before visiting, since site hours at smaller rural monuments can shift seasonally. Wear proper shoes: the upper citadel is a steep, uneven climb, and there is little shade.

Martvili Canyon and Okatse Canyon
These two canyons, roughly 40 minutes apart and both under an hour from Zugdidi or Martvili town, are the best-known natural attractions in Samegrelo and are usually visited together as a day trip from Kutaisi or Zugdidi.
- Martvili Canyon is a short, turquoise gorge on the Abasha river, walked along boardwalks and then crossed by rented rowing boat through a narrower, deeper section with small waterfalls. It is popular and can queue in July and August; arriving at opening time avoids the worst of it.
- Okatse Canyon is a different experience: a cantilevered steel walkway bolted to the canyon wall, running for roughly 800 metres above the gorge floor with no boat element, ending at a glass-floored viewing platform. It suits visitors who prefer a walk to a row and is less crowded than Martvili.
Both sit within the same half-day loop as the Kinchkha waterfall (below) and, further east, the Prometheus Cave near Kutaisi. GTOUR’s Martvili and Okatse Canyons plus Prometheus Cave day trip from Kutaisi covers all three for €304 solo or €162 each for four to six; the same combination also runs from Batumi as Prometheus Cave and Martvili Canyon from Batumi, and travellers who want to add a monastery and a local Ojaleshi wine cellar instead of the cave should look at Martvili Monastery, Salkhino and an Ojaleshi Cellar.
Kinchkha Waterfall
Kinchkha falls a short walk from the Okatse canyon entrance along the same access road, dropping over a wide limestone shelf into a shallow pool that is a popular, cold swimming spot in summer. It is free to view from the lower platform; a short, sometimes muddy path leads closer to the base. Most itineraries treat it as a 20 to 30 minute add-on to the Okatse visit rather than a destination in its own right, and it is included at no extra driving time in the Martvili-Okatse day trips listed above.

Megrelian food: what to order
Megrelian cuisine (Samegrelo’s regional kitchen) is built on maize rather than wheat, uses more chilli and garlic than most Georgian regional cooking, and leans heavily on local cheese, walnuts and the sour plum sauce tkemali. It is reason enough on its own to build in a night in Zugdidi or Martvili.
| Dish | What it is |
|---|---|
| Megrelian khachapuri | A round, cheese-filled bread topped with an extra layer of melted cheese baked on top of the crust, distinct from the open-boat Adjarian version |
| Elarji | A stretchy maize porridge worked together with sulguni cheese over heat until the cheese pulls into long strings, usually eaten with the hands or a fork, often alongside grilled meat or chicken |
| Gebzhalia | Rolled fresh sulguni cheese served cold in a tangy, minted sour-milk (matsoni) sauce, usually as a starter |
| Kuchmachi | Chopped offal (liver, heart, gizzard) fried with walnuts, pomegranate and spices, common across western Georgia but a Samegrelo staple |
| Satsivi | Chicken or turkey in a cold walnut sauce, usually a holiday-table dish here as elsewhere in Georgia |
GTOUR runs a hands-on introduction, Megrelian Cooking Day — Elarji, Kharcho and Ajika, a six-hour session covering elarji, the thick kharcho soup and the region’s hot ajika paste, from €224 solo or €119 each for a group of four to six.
Samegrelo as a base for Svaneti
Zugdidi is the practical gateway to Mestia and the rest of Upper Svaneti, whether travellers arrive by the daytime train from Tbilisi (operated by Georgian Railway) or by road from Kutaisi. The Zugdidi-Mestia road climbs through the Enguri gorge, passing the Enguri Dam and reservoir, and conditions on the higher sections can deteriorate in winter and after heavy rain; current status is published by Georgia’s Roads Department and is worth checking the day before travel, especially outside the May-to-October window. For those not self-driving, GTOUR’s Mestia to Kutaisi or Zugdidi Transfer covers the route in four to five hours at €512 solo or €272 each for four to six, and the longer Tbilisi or Kutaisi to Mestia Private 4×4 Transfer runs direct from the capital. Travellers building a wider loop rather than a there-and-back might prefer Western Georgia in 5 Days, which links Kutaisi, the canyons, Svaneti and Batumi in a single planned route, or the longer Georgia Off the Beaten Track — 9 Days in Racha, Samegrelo and Guria, which treats Samegrelo as a full stop rather than a corridor.
Planning your visit
Most of Samegrelo’s sights can be covered from a base in Kutaisi or Zugdidi in one or two days, and almost none of them require an overnight stay in the region unless continuing on to Svaneti the same way. Spring and autumn give the clearest light for the canyons and the most comfortable walking temperatures; summer brings the heaviest crowds to Martvili and the best swimming at Kinchkha; winter is quiet everywhere but the Zugdidi-Mestia road needs checking in advance. A private car with driver, priced at €240 solo or €128 each for four to six on the Car with Driver by the Day service, or a Licensed Private Guide by the Day at €224 solo, both give more flexibility than a fixed-departure coach for a region where the best stops (a canyon boat ride, a cheese stall, a village church) tend to be unscheduled.
If this guide is part of a trip you are planning, our Western Georgia in 6 Days — Kutaisi, Svaneti and the Sea and Mestia to Kutaisi or Zugdidi Transfer cover the places it describes with a private guide and driver; a GTour travel expert adapts the route to your dates.
