Along Rwanda’s northern frontier, the Virunga Mountains shelter one of Africa’s most sought-after wildlife encounters. Volcanoes National Park is home to eight habituated gorilla families, and park authorities allow only a limited number of visitors to join trekking groups each day. A permit costs USD 1,500 per person, and slots for peak season typically sell out months ahead, so travellers are urged to book through the Rwanda Development Board website as soon as dates are set.
Treks vary widely in length, from thirty minutes to six hours, depending on where a gorilla family has settled overnight. Guides read the forest for clues — flattened vegetation, droppings, knuckle prints pressed into mud — before leading groups to the animals. Once found, visitors are given a single hour in the gorillas’ company, a window many describe as both fleeting and overwhelming, and often the most memorable wildlife experience of their lives.
For those seeking a gentler, less costly alternative, golden monkey tracking offers its own rewards. Groups are smaller, waiting times shorter, and the monkeys’ acrobatics through the bamboo canopy are no less captivating, all at a fraction of the gorilla permit fee.
Travellers heading from Europe or the Caucasus can typically reach Kigali via one or two connecting flights, with Volcanoes National Park roughly a two-and-a-half-hour drive from the capital — a manageable add-on for those already planning an East Africa leg of their trip.
