Overview

Village Uplistsikhe lies in the Shida Kartli region of eastern Georgia, on the left bank of the Mtkvari (Kura) River, roughly 10 kilometres east of the regional centre of Gori. The village takes its name from the rock-hewn town that rises directly above it — one of the oldest urban settlements in the Caucasus, carved into a long volcanic-tuff outcrop overlooking the river valley. For most visitors the village is a staging point: a cluster of houses, vineyards and small farms that has grown up at the foot of the ancient site, and a convenient base for exploring the wider Shida Kartli countryside.

The village matters because of what stands above it. Uplistsikhe (literally “the Lord’s Fortress”) is one of Georgia’s most significant archaeological monuments, documenting continuous habitation from the late Bronze and Early Iron Age through the medieval period, and reflecting the country’s transition from pre-Christian cult practice to Christianity after the 4th century. It is included on Georgia’s Tentative List for UNESCO World Heritage status. GTour includes the village and its rock-hewn town in private itineraries through the Shida Kartli region, often combined with Gori and the wineries listed below.

History

Archaeological work indicates that the Uplistsikhe plateau was first settled in the early first millennium BC, with the rock-cut town developing its main form between the 6th century BC and the early centuries AD. Its position above a ford on the Mtkvari, on a trade route linking the Black Sea coast with Central Asia, made it an important stop for caravans moving through the Kartli heartland.

Before the Christianisation of Kartli under King Mirian III in the 4th century, Uplistsikhe functioned as a major centre of pagan worship, with temples dedicated to sun and fire deities cut directly into the rock; the remains of an open hall identified by archaeologists as a sanctuary for fire-related ritual survive near the site’s upper terrace. After the conversion of the kingdom described in accounts of Mirian III of Iberia, the town adapted to its new religious context, and a three-nave basilica, known locally as Uplistsulis Eklesia, was built on the upper plateau in the 9th or 10th century, reusing the rock terrace as its foundation.

Uplistsikhe retained strategic and economic importance through the early medieval Georgian kingdoms, serving at times as a royal residence and refuge. Georgian chronicles associate the site with Queen Tamar’s court in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, during the kingdom’s political and military struggles. The town’s decline followed the Mongol invasions of the 13th century, which devastated much of Shida Kartli, and further damage came with later Persian and Ottoman incursions into the region; by the early modern period the site had been largely abandoned as a settlement, leaving the village below as the area’s inhabited successor.

Systematic archaeological excavation of Uplistsikhe began in the Soviet period, from the 1950s onward, and the site has since been managed and partially restored as a protected cultural monument, with conservation and visitor facilities overseen by Georgia’s national heritage authorities.

What to see

The rock-hewn town of Uplistsikhe

The main monument is a complex of several hundred rock-cut structures — dwellings, halls, wine cellars and streets — carved into a ridge above the Mtkvari. Visitors climb through narrow passages between chambers of varying sizes, some with coffered ceilings imitating wooden construction, giving a sense of the density of the ancient settlement.

Tamar’s Hall

The largest surviving interior space on the site, this hall is traditionally associated with Queen Tamar and features a carved coffered ceiling that mimics timber beams. Its scale suggests a ceremonial or royal function within the settlement’s later phases.

Uplistsulis Eklesia (the basilica)

A stone three-nave church built on the upper plateau in the 9th–10th century, standing where earlier pagan structures once stood. It marks the site’s transition from a pre-Christian religious centre to a Christian one and remains the most visible built structure above the rock-cut chambers.

The rock-cut “theatre” and pharmacy chamber

Near the centre of the site, an open rectangular structure with tiered rock seating is interpreted by some researchers as a venue for public assembly or performance. Close by, a smaller chamber with carved niches is traditionally known as the “pharmacy,” thought to have stored medicinal preparations.

The river tunnel

A narrow tunnel cut through the rock connects the upper town to the riverbank below, allowing residents to reach the Mtkvari for water without leaving the fortified settlement — a detail that illustrates the defensive planning of the site.

Gori and its fortress

The nearby town of Gori, a short drive from the village, has its own hilltop fortress and museums, and is commonly paired with Uplistsikhe on a single day trip from Tbilisi.

Getting there

From Tbilisi, Village Uplistsikhe is about 1 hour 50 minutes by road, via the E60 highway through Mtskheta and Gori before turning off toward the river. Regular marshrutky (shared minivans) run from Tbilisi’s Didube station to Gori; from there, a taxi or local transport covers the final stretch to the site. A passenger train also connects Tbilisi and Gori, operated by Georgian Railway, though onward travel to the village still requires a short taxi ride.

From Kutaisi, the drive takes roughly 2 hours 50 minutes along the main east–west highway toward Gori. From Batumi, allow about 4 hours 55 minutes by road. Road conditions along these routes can be checked in advance through GTour’s road status page. GTour arranges private transfers and guided day trips from all three cities with an English-speaking guide; see available tours for options.

When to go

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer the most comfortable conditions, since the rock-cut town has almost no natural shade and summer midday heat on the exposed terraces can be intense. Early morning visits in summer avoid both the heat and the largest tour groups. Winter visits are possible but some paths can be slippery after rain or frost, so sturdy footwear is advisable year-round.

Where to stay and eat

The village and surrounding Shida Kartli countryside have a small but growing network of wineries, guest houses and workshops. For wine tastings and cellar visits, GTour’s register includes Uplistsikhe Estate, Gogi Dvalishvili’s Wine Cellar, Peradze Wine Cellar and AGIDELA. For food, Argo serves local dishes near the site. Those wanting to stay overnight can book The Quiet Courtyard guest house or Astana Palace hotel. Visitors interested in traditional crafts can also arrange a session at George Tatulashvili Ceramics. GTour’s verified register lists more options below, and further regional picks can be found in the best-of guides and destination guides.

Practical notes

Uplistsikhe operates as a managed archaeological site with a ticket office and marked paths; an entrance fee applies and hours are generally longer in summer and shorter in winter, so checking current opening times before visiting is recommended. The terrain is uneven rock with steps and narrow passages, making the site unsuitable for wheelchairs and difficult for visitors with limited mobility. Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and water are advisable, particularly as shade is limited. Mobile signal is generally reliable in the village but can be weaker on the exposed upper terraces of the site.

Questions travellers ask

Is Uplistsikhe the same as the village of the same name?

No. Uplistsikhe refers both to the ancient rock-hewn town and to the modern village that sits below it on the Mtkvari River. The historical site is the main attraction; the village itself is small and primarily agricultural.

How long does a visit to the site take?

Most visitors spend between one and two hours walking through the rock-cut chambers, the basilica and the river tunnel. Those combining it with Gori or a wine tasting typically allow half a day in total.

Is Uplistsikhe a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

It is not yet inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List but is included on Georgia’s Tentative List, a preliminary step toward possible future nomination.

Can Uplistsikhe be combined with Gori in one day?

Yes. Gori is only a short drive away and is commonly visited together with Uplistsikhe on day trips from Tbilisi, often alongside a stop at a local winery.

Is the site suitable for children?

Older children generally enjoy exploring the rock-cut passages and tunnel, but the uneven terrain, steps and unguarded drops mean young children need close supervision.

What should visitors wear?

Sturdy, closed shoes with good grip are recommended because of the smooth, sometimes sloped rock surfaces. A hat and sun protection are useful in summer, as most of the site is exposed.

Is there public transport directly to the site?

There is no direct marshrutka to the site itself; travellers typically take transport to Gori and continue by taxi, or join an organised tour that includes transfers.

Are there facilities at the site, such as food or restrooms?

Basic visitor facilities, including a ticket office and restrooms, are available near the entrance, but food options are limited on site, so visiting a nearby restaurant or winery before or after is advisable.

What is the best time of day to visit?

Early morning or late afternoon offers softer light and cooler temperatures, which is particularly worthwhile in summer, and generally means fewer visitors on the main pathways.
