Seven days is the minimum for the Georgia that appears on postcards: Tbilisi‘s old town and sulphur baths, the UNESCO churches of Mtskheta, the Georgian Military Highway up to Kazbegi and Gergeti Trinity Church, and two nights among the vineyards of Kakheti. It works as a loop out of Tbilisi, with two to three nights in the capital bookending two or three nights on the road. If you would rather trade the mountains of Khevi for the towers of Svaneti, the week still works, but something has to give: either Kazbegi or Kakheti, and two long travel days instead of one.
Below is the itinerary GTour runs most often for first-time visitors, the honest trade-offs of the Svaneti variant, realistic drive times, and what each version costs as a private tour, a self-drive package, or an independent trip on marshrutka and train. Road and border rules do change; where that is possible we say how to check before you travel.
The classic week, day by day
This is the route behind two of our own itineraries, Georgia Classic in 7 Days and Georgia in 7 Days — The Classic Grand Tour, which cover the same ground with slightly different pacing.
| Day | Base | Drive time | What fills the day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tbilisi | Arrival | Airport transfer, settle in, evening walk in the Old Town |
| 2 | Tbilisi | 30–40 min to Mtskheta | Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in the morning, Tbilisi sights (Narikala, sulphur baths, Dry Bridge) in the afternoon |
| 3 | Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) | 3.5 hours each way | Georgian Military Highway, Ananuri fortress, Gudauri viewpoint, 4×4 up to Gergeti Trinity Church |
| 4 | Telavi or Sighnaghi | 2–2.5 hours from Kazbegi via Tbilisi | Alaverdi or Tsinandali, first wine cellar, overnight in wine country |
| 5 | Sighnaghi area | Short local drives | Sighnaghi’s walls and Bodbe Monastery, a second qvevri cellar, a village supra |
| 6 | Tbilisi | 2 hours back | Return to the capital, free afternoon or a food or craft workshop, farewell dinner |
| 7 | Tbilisi | Departure | Last market walk if the flight is in the afternoon, airport transfer |
Useful single-day building blocks if you prefer to assemble the week yourself: Mtskheta Half-Day — Jvari and Svetitskhoveli, Georgian Military Highway — Ananuri, Gudauri and Gergeti in a Day, and Kakheti Classic — Sighnaghi, Bodbe and Two Cellars.
The Svaneti variant: what actually fits in seven days
Svaneti is roughly a day’s drive from Tbilisi in either direction, so it genuinely does not fit alongside Kazbegi and Kakheti in one week without two very long driving days. The honest version of the variant trades Kazbegi for Svaneti and keeps Kakheti short or drops it:
- Day 1: Arrive Tbilisi.
- Day 2: Tbilisi and Mtskheta, as above.
- Day 3: Tbilisi to Mestia, about 8 hours direct or roughly 3.5 hours to Kutaisi plus 4.5 hours on to Mestia if you break the drive and see Kutaisi’s Bagrati Cathedral on the way.
- Day 4: Mestia and Ushguli, towers, the Svaneti Museum, and the road up to Georgia’s highest permanently inhabited village if conditions allow.
- Day 5: Mestia to Kutaisi or Zugdidi (4–5 hours), overnight in Kutaisi.
- Day 6: Kutaisi to Tbilisi (3.5 hours) or straight to the airport if you fly out of Kutaisi instead of Tbilisi.
- Day 7: Departure, or a half-day in Kakheti if your flight is in the evening.
A seasonal domestic flight sometimes links Natakhtari (near Tbilisi) or Kutaisi with Mestia’s small Queen Tamar Airport, which can cut a travel day to under an hour, but schedules are weather-dependent and change year to year. Confirm current routes and reliability directly with the operator and airport before building a flight into your plan rather than assuming it will run. For a week that genuinely includes both Kazbegi and Svaneti without the rush, Georgia in 10 Days — Tbilisi to Svaneti to the Sea or the Western Georgia in 5 Days add-on paired with a Tbilisi-Kazbegi-Kakheti week are more realistic.
Drive times at a glance
| Leg | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Tbilisi to Mtskheta | 30–40 minutes |
| Tbilisi to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) | 3.5 hours |
| Tbilisi to Telavi or Sighnaghi | 2 hours |
| Tbilisi to Kutaisi | 3.5 hours |
| Tbilisi or Kutaisi to Mestia | 8 hours from Tbilisi, 4.5 hours from Kutaisi |
| Mestia to Kutaisi or Zugdidi | 4–5 hours |
The Military Highway over the Jvari Pass and the Zugdidi-Mestia road can both close temporarily for snow clearance or landslides, usually for hours rather than days, most often between November and April. Check current conditions before you set off; our own road-status page tracks this for the routes we run, and the national road authority publishes live updates.
Private tour, self-drive, or independent: what it costs
All three approaches cover the same ground. The difference is who drives, who plans the logistics, and what happens if a pass closes or a cellar cancels.
| Option | What is included | Price per person (two travellers) |
|---|---|---|
| Fully guided private tour | Licensed guide, private car, booked hotels, entrance fees arranged, one phone number for problems | €1,890 (Georgia Classic in 7 Days or Georgia in 7 Days — The Classic Grand Tour) |
| Self-drive package | Rental car, pre-booked hotels, a fixed route with notes, 24/7 phone support, you drive | €1,390 (Georgia Self-Drive — 7 Days) |
| Car with driver, day by day | Private driver and vehicle each day, you choose hotels and pace yourself | From €150 per day (Car with Driver by the Day, sedan or minivan, up to 10 hours) |
| Guide added to your own car | Licensed guide for specific days only, e.g. Mtskheta and Kakheti | From €140 per day (Licensed Private Guide by the Day) |
| Independent, public transport | Shared marshrutka from Didube station, self-booked guesthouses, most flexible on price, least flexible on time | Lowest cash cost, highest time cost |
Airport transfers are worth pricing separately rather than assuming a hotel shuttle: a private sedan from Tbilisi airport runs €45 for one to three travellers, a minivan €58, both fixed and including 60 minutes of free waiting. Kutaisi airport to Tbilisi is €190 by sedan, and Kutaisi airport to Mestia by 4×4 or minivan is €390, useful figures if you are flying a low-cost route into Kutaisi for either version of this week.
Where to sleep and eat
Three bases cover the classic week: Tbilisi (two or three nights), Stepantsminda or a Gudauri hotel on the way up to Kazbegi (one night), and Telavi or Sighnaghi in Kakheti (one or two nights). For the Svaneti variant, add Mestia (one or two nights) and, if you break the drive, Kutaisi (one night). Room rates move with the season and with Tbilisi’s conference and festival calendar, so we do not quote fixed hotel prices here; our hotel booking help is free for recommendations, and if you want us to make the reservation the fee is a flat €15 per booking, never hidden in the room rate.
Meals worth planning around: a supra with a tamada and polyphonic singing on at least one evening (Supra Evening — a Georgian Feast with a Tamada and Polyphonic Song), a cooking class in Tbilisi if you want to take khinkali folding home with you, and at least two cellar visits in Kakheti, since Kakhetian qvevri wine and Svan cuisine (kubdari, tashmijabi) are different enough to be worth tasting both if your route allows.
When to go and what the season changes
Late April to early June and September to late October give the most reliable road conditions on both the Military Highway and the Zugdidi-Mestia road, plus the Kakheti wine harvest in September. July and August are warm and busy in Tbilisi and Kazbegi; winter (December to March) closes Ushguli to most vehicles and can bring temporary closures on the Jvari Pass, though Gudauri’s ski season makes a winter version of the Kazbegi leg worthwhile on its own, as in Georgia in Winter — Gudauri Skiing, Tbilisi and Kakheti.
Most Western, Gulf and many other nationalities can enter Georgia visa-free for short stays, but the list and duration change periodically; check your specific nationality against the current rules before booking flights, not after.
If this guide is part of a trip you are planning, our Georgia in 4 Days — Tbilisi, Kazbegi and Kakheti and Western Georgia in 6 Days — Kutaisi, Svaneti and the Sea cover the places it describes with a private guide and driver; a GTour travel expert adapts the route to your dates.
Practical summary
- Classic route: Tbilisi (2–3 nights), Mtskheta (half day), Kazbegi (1 night), Kakheti (1–2 nights), back to Tbilisi.
- Svaneti variant trades Kazbegi for Mestia and Ushguli; expect two long driving days (up to 8 hours each) unless a seasonal flight is running, which you should confirm directly rather than assume.
- Drive-time anchors: Tbilisi–Mtskheta 30–40 min, Tbilisi–Kazbegi 3.5 h, Tbilisi–Kakheti 2 h, Tbilisi–Kutaisi 3.5 h, Kutaisi–Mestia 4.5 h.
- Guided private week from €1,890 per person (two travellers); self-drive package from €1,390; independent travel is cheapest in cash but least forgiving of closures or missed connections.
- Check road conditions on the Jvari Pass and the Zugdidi-Mestia road before departure, especially November to April.
- Confirm visa-free entry rules for your nationality before booking, since the exempt list can change.
- Book hotels early for September harvest season and the Gudauri ski season, both of which overlap with this itinerary’s shoulder months.
