Caving and canyoning in Georgia split neatly into two very different experiences. Around Kutaisi, in the limestone karst of Imereti, you can walk or glide by boat through lit, developed show caves such as Prometheus Cave and Sataplia with no equipment beyond sturdy shoes. Further south, in the Arabika Massif on the Abkhaz side of the administrative boundary line, lie Krubera-Voronja and Veryovkina, among the deepest known caves on the planet, reached only by multi-week technical expeditions and lying in territory outside the control of the Georgian government. Canyoning, meanwhile, is a separate sport that has taken root in two pockets of the country: the walkway-and-boat canyons of Okatse and Martvili near Kutaisi, and the steeper, less developed river gorges of Adjara, where a handful of operators now run genuine rope-and-wetsuit descents.

For the overwhelming majority of visitors, “caving” in Georgia means an hour or two underground with a licensed guide on a fixed path, and “canyoning” means a dramatic walk along a cantilevered platform or a short boat ride through a gorge rather than abseiling into one. Rules, opening days and water levels change with the seasons and with maintenance work, so treat every price and opening time below as a starting point and confirm the current position with the Agency of Protected Areas before you travel, since it manages both Prometheus Cave and Sataplia.

Show caves versus wild caves: what the words mean here

Georgian tourism uses “cave” loosely, and it is worth separating the two categories before booking anything.

If a tour description simply says “cave visit” near Kutaisi, assume it means a show cave. Wild caving in Georgia is a niche pursuit run by a small number of speleological clubs and foreign expedition teams, not a product sold on the open tourism market.

Imereti’s karst country: Prometheus, Sataplia and the Tskaltubo caves

Imereti sits on a thick limestone plateau riddled with sinkholes, underground rivers and several hundred recorded caves, a legacy of millions of years of water dissolving rock. Two of these are developed for visitors under the national protected-areas system.

• Prometheus Cave, near Kutaisi, has an illuminated walking route through chambers of stalactites and stalagmites followed by a short boat ride on its underground river; conditions and the boat section depend on water levels, so check the current operating status with the Agency of Protected Areas before visiting in spring flood or late-summer drought.
• Sataplia Nature Reserve, also near Kutaisi, combines a short cave walk with a glass-floored platform over preserved dinosaur footprints and a forest trail, and is managed by the same agency.

The deepest-cave story: Krubera and Veryovkina explained

The two deepest caves yet found on Earth sit within a few kilometres of each other in the Arabika Massif above Gagra. Krubera-Voronja held the world depth record for over a decade after Ukrainian-led expeditions pushed past 2,000 metres in the 2000s; Veryovkina Cave, explored intensively by Russian speleological teams, later reached a greater depth, making it the current record holder, with Krubera close behind. These are not caves anyone visits casually. Reaching the deepest sumps involves weeks underground, multiple subterranean camps, diving through flooded galleries and a level of cold-water technical skill held by only a small international community of cavers. There is also a plain practical obstacle for anyone reading this from Tbilisi or Kutaisi: the Arabika Massif lies in Abkhazia, a region outside the control of the Georgian government since the 1990s war. Canyoning near Kutaisi: Okatse and Martvili

What most visitors call “canyoning” in Imereti is closer to canyon sightseeing than the rope-based sport of the same name elsewhere.

• Okatse Canyon has a steel cantilevered walkway bolted into the cliff face, running roughly 800 metres above the gorge floor with views down to the river and waterfalls; there is no swimming or abseiling involved, only a vertiginous walk in a hard hat on some sections.
• Martvili Canyon is explored on foot along the rim and then by small rowing boat through a narrow turquoise channel beneath overhanging cliffs, with a swimming spot at some points in summer when water levels and temperature allow.

Canyoning in Adjara: Mirveti, Machakhela and beyond

Adjara’s mountain valleys around Khulo, Keda and the Machakhela gorge have steeper, wetter terrain and a smaller but growing number of operators offering genuine canyoning with wetsuits, harnesses and short abseils down waterfalls, rather than the walkway model used near Kutaisi. This is a newer, less standardised market than Imereti’s show-canyon circuit, so ask any operator directly for their safety certification, group size and insurance arrangements before booking, and expect prices and availability to vary by season and water level far more than at Okatse or Martvili. Show caves at Prometheus and Sataplia are visited with the reserve’s own staff guides included in the entrance ticket; no personal gear beyond closed shoes and a light layer is required, since temperatures underground sit in the low teens year round. For the walkway and boat canyons, a hard hat is normally supplied by the site and comfortable, grippy footwear is enough. Genuine canyoning with ropes, or any wild caving, is a different matter: you need a wetsuit, helmet with chin strap, a harness fitted by the guide, and closed-toe footwear with good grip, all generally supplied by a specialist operator rather than brought from home. Adjara’s canyoning season generally runs from April or May through October, dictated by snowmelt volume and water temperature in the gorges.
