Running over 6,000 kilometres from Ethiopia’s Afar Triangle to Mozambique, the East African Rift Valley marks a slow fracture in the continent’s crust, splitting into eastern and western branches through Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and beyond. In Kenya, the rift forms a trough 45 to 65 kilometres wide, with a floor at roughly 600 metres above sea level flanked by escarpments reaching 2,000 metres, producing sharp climatic contrasts over short distances.
This geology underpins East Africa’s most recognisable ecosystems. Volcanic minerals washed into closed-basin lakes such as Nakuru, Bogoria and Magadi have made them highly alkaline, with a pH near 10.5, favouring a single algae species, Arthrospira fusiformis, that sustains the more than 1.5 million Lesser Flamingos recorded by the IUCN in 2022. Lakes with outlets, like Naivasha, remain fresh by contrast. Further south, ash from the Ngorongoro volcanic complex, laid down between one and 2.5 million years ago, gave the Serengeti and Masai Mara their calcium-rich, nitrogen-poor short grasses — the same grasses that draw wildebeed herds to calve on the southern plains.
The rift continues widening at 6–7 millimetres annually, a process dramatically visible during Ethiopia’s 2005 Afar event, when a 60-kilometre fissure opened within days; over tens of millions of years, this spreading is expected to eventually separate the Horn of Africa from the mainland.
For travellers combining a Caucasus itinerary with East Africa, the Rift’s accessible sites near Nairobi — Hell’s Gate, Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru — make for a practical add-on after a Tbilisi connection, with flights routing conveniently through Gulf or European hubs.
