Rivers, lakes and swimming spots in Georgia: where you can swim safely

Georgia has three different kinds of swimming on offer, and they carry three very different risk profiles. The Black Sea coast at Batumi, Kobuleti, Ureki and Anaklia is warm, shallow near the shore and reasonably well supervised in July and August, though lifeguard cover and a flag system exist only on a handful of managed beaches, not everywhere. Lowland lakes close to Tbilisi, principally the Tbilisi Sea reservoir, Lisi Lake and Bazaleti, are the most forgiving and the most popular with families. Mountain rivers, glacial lakes and canyon pools are the most beautiful and by far the most dangerous: cold water, sudden depth changes, hidden currents and fast-rising flash floods have caused fatalities in Georgia almost every summer, and most of these sites have no lifeguard at all.

The short, honest answer is: swim at a supervised Black Sea beach or at the designated bathing areas of the Tbilisi Sea and Lisi Lake if you want the lowest risk; treat Bazaleti and other lowland lakes as reasonably safe for confident swimmers who respect depth and weather; and treat every mountain river, waterfall pool and high-altitude lake in Georgia as a place to admire, paddle at the edge of, or photograph, rather than a place to swim, unless a local guide who knows the specific spot that day tells you otherwise.

Black Sea beaches by water quality and supervision

Georgia’s Black Sea coast runs from the Turkish border at Sarpi north through Batumi, Kobuleti, Shekvetili, Ureki and Poti to Anaklia near Abkhazia. Water is generally calm, the shelf is shallow, and the swimming season runs roughly from June to mid-September, with the sea noticeably warmer in Adjara than further north. Georgia does not publish a Blue Flag-certified bathing water list in the way EU member states do; for current monitoring and any public health notices on coastal water, the responsible body is the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, whose site is the place to check before you travel, rather than relying on hearsay.

• Batumi city beach and Boulevard: pebble beach, lifeguard towers and a flag system in the main season, operated by the municipality; busiest and best supervised stretch of coast. See batumi.ge for seasonal notices.
• Kvariati and Sarpi: clearer water, fewer facilities, patchy or no lifeguard cover outside peak weeks.
• Kobuleti: long, shallow, family-friendly, with lifeguard posts concentrated near hotels rather than the whole length of beach.
• Ureki and Shekvetili: known for dark magnetic sand, shallow entry, popular with families; lifeguard presence is seasonal and uneven.
• Anaklia: quieter, wide beach, limited supervision.

Our own To the Black Sea — Poti, Paliastomi Lake and Ureki Magnetic Sand and Gonio Fortress, Sarpi and the Batumi Botanical Garden day trips include time at these beaches; ask your driver or guide which stretch has an active lifeguard post on the day, since cover can shift week to week even within one resort town.

Tbilisi’s lakes: the Tbilisi Sea, Lisi and Kus Tba

The Tbilisi Sea (Tbilisi Reservoir) on the city’s eastern edge is the capital’s main summer swimming spot, with several informal and a few managed beach sections, beach clubs, and pedalos. Water quality is monitored by the city, but coverage by lifeguards is limited to the busier commercial beach clubs rather than the open shoreline; check current notices with Tbilisi City Hall before relying on supervision. Lisi Lake, on the western edge of town, has a developed shoreline with cafes and a boardwalk; swimming is popular on its southern and western banks in summer, but the lake is spring-fed and noticeably cold even on hot days, and several drowning incidents have been reported there in recent years, usually among swimmers who went out beyond the shallows. Kus Tba (Turtle Lake), below Mtatsminda, is smaller and shallower and used mainly for paddling and sunbathing rather than serious swimming.

Bazaleti and other lowland lakes

Lake Bazaleti, near Dusheti on the way to the Georgian Military Highway, sits at a modest altitude and warms up through summer, making it one of the more swimmer-friendly lakes outside Tbilisi; it has guesthouses, boat hire and informal beach areas rather than a formal lifeguard service. Treat it the way you would treat any unsupervised lake: swim parallel to the shore rather than straight out, keep children within standing depth, and avoid the lake after heavy rain when runoff can cloud the water and hide submerged branches or debris near inflow points. Other lowland reservoirs around Georgia, such as those near Kartli’s wine villages, are used informally by locals for cooling off; none that we are aware of carry an official lifeguard service, so the same caution applies.

Mountain lakes: beautiful, cold, rarely safe for swimming

Georgia’s high-altitude lakes, the Abudelauri lakes below Chaukhi, the Koruldi lakes above Mestia, Black Rock Lake in Lagodekhi, and the remote Tobavarchkhili in Racha, are glacial or snowmelt-fed and typically sit between 2,000 and 3,000 metres. Even in August their water temperature is close to what would be called cold-water-shock territory for an unacclimatised swimmer, and sudden weather changes at altitude bring hypothermia risk even for a short dip. We do not recommend full immersion swimming in these lakes; wading at the margin for a photograph, with someone else present and your core kept warm, is as far as most visitors should go. If you are keen to see them, our Chaukhi Pass Day Hike — Juta to the Abudelauri Lakes, Svaneti Day Hikes — Koruldi Lakes, Chalaadi Glacier and Hatsvali, Lagodekhi — Black Rock Lake Trek and Tobavarchkhili — the Silver Lake Trek are built around viewing and photographing these lakes safely with a guide who knows current conditions.

River pools, canyons and waterfalls

Western Georgia’s canyons, Martvili and Okatse near Kutaisi, and the Machakhela valley and Mtirala rainforest near Batumi, have striking turquoise pools below waterfalls that look inviting in photographs. In practice, most of the famous pools in Martvili Canyon are visited by guided boat rather than by swimming, partly for conservation reasons and partly because the current below the falls is stronger than it looks. Smaller, calmer pools do exist on quieter rivers and are used by local families on hot days, but water temperature even in July can be a shock, river beds shift after every flood so depth is unpredictable, and there is rarely anyone trained in water rescue nearby. Our Martvili & Okatse Canyons + Prometheus Cave day trip and Machakhela Valley — Arched Bridges, Mirveti Waterfall and a Village Lunch tour will tell you, on the day, which pools are currently safe enough for a supervised paddle and which are for viewing only.

Why mountain rivers are dangerous

Georgia’s major mountain rivers, the Aragvi, the Tergi (Terek) through Kazbegi, the Enguri through Svaneti and the Rioni through Racha and Imereti, are fed largely by snowmelt and glacier melt. That means three hazards compound each other: the water is cold enough to cause cramp or cold shock within minutes even on a hot day; the current is often far stronger than its surface appearance suggests, especially around bends and below bridges; and river level can rise by half a metre or more within an hour after rain or a warm afternoon of glacier melt upstream, turning a shallow crossing into a genuine flood hazard. For hydrometeorological warnings and river-level information, the National Environmental Agency is the official source, and it is worth a check before any riverside camp or hike in the mountains. As a rule, we advise against swimming in any of Georgia’s named mountain rivers; wading at the edge in sandals, well away from the main channel, is the limit of what is sensible.

Lifeguards and flags: what to expect and how to check

There is no single nationwide flag system covering every beach and lake in Georgia the way some countries operate one. In practice:

• Batumi’s main municipal beach and a few resort beaches in Kobuleti and Ureki run seasonal lifeguard posts, typically from June to September, with a basic red-yellow-green flag convention; confirm current hours with batumi.ge or your hotel, since staffing can be reduced in shoulder weeks.
• The Tbilisi Sea has supervision at some commercial beach clubs but not along the open shoreline; check with Tbilisi City Hall for any public notices before swimming outside a staffed area.
• Lisi Lake, Bazaleti and smaller lakes generally have no formal lifeguard service.
• Mountain rivers, waterfall pools and high-altitude lakes have no lifeguard presence anywhere that we are aware of; safety there depends entirely on your own judgement, a local guide’s knowledge, and checking weather and river-level warnings in advance.

If you are travelling with children or are an inexperienced swimmer, treat the absence of a flag or lifeguard as the default assumption in Georgia, not the exception, and plan accordingly.

Practical summary

• Safest options: Batumi’s supervised beach sections, the Tbilisi Sea’s staffed beach clubs, Lisi Lake’s shallow margins, Bazaleti Lake.
• Highest risk: any glacier-fed or snowmelt river (Aragvi, Tergi, Enguri, Rioni), high-altitude lakes above 2,000 metres, and waterfall pools after rain.
• Check before you go: coastal water notices via mepa.gov.ge, river and weather warnings via nea.gov.ge, and local beach hours via batumi.ge or tbilisi.gov.ge.
• Never swim alone in an unsupervised spot, avoid rivers after rain or on hot glacier-melt afternoons, and keep children within standing depth at all lakes without a lifeguard.
• If a mountain lake or canyon pool is on your itinerary, book it as a guided hike or canyon tour rather than a swim, and let the guide make the daily call on conditions.
• For official, dated rules or any change in lifeguard provision, verify directly with the linked government pages rather than relying on older travel write-ups, including this one.
