Itinerary

Day 1Pickup from Zugdidi and drive into the Egrisi foothills to the trailhead. First trekking day through mixed forest to the night's camp, set up and served by the support team.

Day 2Longest trekking day, climbing through forest and then alpine meadow toward the high camp near Tobavarchkhili. Terrain is steep in sections and exposed above the treeline.

Day 3Full day around the lake itself, with time at the waterfalls that feed it and a side walk along the ridge if weather allows. Second night at the same high camp.

Day 4Descend back to the trailhead and drive out via Martvili, stopping at the monastery and Martvili Canyon, before the transfer back to Zugdidi or onward to Kutaisi.

Good to know

· Demanding trek with sustained climbs and one long day above the treeline; previous multi-day hiking experience is recommended
· Runs only late July to September; outside this window snow and stream crossings make the route unsafe
· No mobile signal once past the first day's camp
· Nights at altitude are cold even in summer; bring a sleeping bag rated for at least 0°C
· Weather in the Egrisi range changes quickly; bring full waterproofs regardless of the forecast
· Sturdy broken-in hiking boots are required, not trail runners

Questions

How difficult is this trek compared with Mestia to Ushguli?
It is harder: steeper gradients, fewer facilities en route, and no villages to resupply at, since the support team carries everything.

Do we need previous high-altitude experience?
No technical climbing skills are needed, but good hiking fitness and at least one prior multi-day trek are strongly advised.

What does the support team actually carry?
Tents, cooking equipment and food are carried by horses or porters (confirmed at booking), so you carry only a day pack with water, layers and personal items.

Can this run outside July to September?
No. Snow lies on the higher sections outside this window and the route is not run then.

Cancellation

Free cancellation up to 7 days before the tour. Between 7 days and 48 hours: 50 % of the price. Less than 48 hours or no-show: no refund. If a mountain road closes and the tour cannot run, you choose a new date or a full refund.

Payment

20 % deposit confirms the booking. Deposit by card or bank transfer when the date is confirmed; the balance in cash or by card at the start of the tour. No hidden fees — fuel, parking, driver and guide are included; entrance tickets, meals and hotels are listed per tour.

Insurance

Since 1 January 2026 every foreign visitor to Georgia must hold health and accident insurance with cover of at least 30,000 GEL — see our guide to the rule. Our vehicles carry passenger liability insurance; your travel policy covers you.
