What vaccinations do you need for Georgia?

Georgia sets no vaccination requirement for the great majority of visitors in 2026. The one legal condition, unchanged for years and current as of 27 October 2026, is that travellers arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission must show proof of yellow fever vaccination, in line with the International Health Regulations that Georgia, like most countries, applies at its borders. For everyone else, there is no yellow fever or any other vaccine demanded on entry, and no vaccination certificate is checked at Tbilisi, Kutaisi or Batumi airport for ordinary leisure or business travel.

The nuance is that “not required” is different from “not recommended.” Public-health authorities such as the World Health Organization, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the UK’s NHS travel health services treat Georgia the way they treat most of the Caucasus and Eastern Europe: a destination where routine immunity should simply be current, where hepatitis A is commonly advised because of food and water exposure, and where rabies and tick-borne encephalitis become relevant mainly for people heading into rural mountains, caves or forests rather than for a city break in Tbilisi or Batumi. The right vaccines depend less on the country and more on what you plan to do once you arrive, and for how long.

The one entry rule: yellow fever, and only from at-risk countries

Georgia does not ask arriving travellers for a general vaccination card. The only scenario where proof is checked is for people coming from, or who have transited through, a country where yellow fever transmission is a recognised risk, mostly in parts of sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America. This is standard International Health Regulations practice, not a Georgia-specific rule, and it has not changed for 2026. If your itinerary includes such a country before Georgia, confirm the current list and certificate rules on Georgia’s e-visa and entry portal before you fly, since country lists are reviewed periodically. See evisa.gov.ge for the current entry conditions, and Georgia’s Legislative Herald for the underlying public health order at matsne.gov.ge.

Routine vaccines worth checking first

Before anything Georgia-specific, a travel clinic or GP visit four to six weeks ahead is the normal advice for any international trip, and this applies to Georgia as much as anywhere. The point is simply to confirm your existing national schedule is up to date, not to add anything unusual.

• Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) — confirm two documented doses
• Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis — booster every ten years, sooner for a deep wound
• Seasonal influenza — relevant in the cooler months, roughly October to March
• Polio booster — a one-time adult booster if your childhood record is unclear

Hepatitis A: the common travel-clinic recommendation

Hepatitis A, spread through contaminated food and water, is the vaccine most frequently suggested by travel medicine services for visits to Georgia, alongside most of the Caucasus and Eastern Europe. It is not legally required and city hotels and restaurants in Tbilisi and Batumi generally maintain good hygiene standards, but rural guesthouses, street food and self-catering in mountain villages carry the usual food-and-water caveats of any developing tourism region. A travel clinic will usually judge this on your itinerary and how long you are staying.

Rabies: worth discussing if you are trekking or handling animals

Georgia has stray dogs in both cities and rural areas, and a working shepherd-dog population around high pastures. Rabies pre-exposure vaccination is not demanded for ordinary tourism, but UK and US travel medicine guidance generally raises it for travellers who will be more than 24 hours from reliable medical care, which in practice means multi-day trekking in places such as Svaneti, Khevsureti or Tusheti, caving, or close contact with animals. Pre-exposure vaccination does not remove the need for urgent treatment after a bite or scratch, it simplifies it, since post-exposure treatment is more complex and not always immediately available outside Tbilisi. Anyone bitten or scratched by an animal anywhere in Georgia should seek medical attention the same day rather than wait. Travellers planning the Tusheti expedition or multi-day routes in Svaneti should raise this specifically with a travel clinic before departure.

Tick-borne encephalitis: a seasonal, regional risk

Tick-borne encephalitis is transmitted by tick bites in forested and high-pasture areas of the Caucasus, with risk concentrated in the warmer months, broadly April to September. It is not a routine recommendation for a standard Tbilisi-Kakheti-Mtskheta itinerary, but travel medicine services increasingly mention it for hikers and campers spending extended time in forests and mountain meadows, for example around Kazbegi, Svaneti, Racha or Borjomi‘s forested slopes. Practical prevention matters as much as vaccination: long sleeves and trousers, insect repellent, and checking for ticks after walks in long grass or forest.

None of this replaces a personal consultation. Age, pregnancy, existing conditions, duration of stay and the specific regions on your route all change the calculation, and a doctor or travel clinic is the right place to decide, not a general article. If your plans include remote trekking, mention the Tusheti expedition or Mestia and Ushguli routes by name when you see a travel clinic, since the advice differs for those compared with a short Tbilisi and Kakheti trip.

Where this comes from

The entry rule on yellow fever reflects Georgia’s International Health Regulations obligations as published through its own entry and legal channels, checked at evisa.gov.ge and matsne.gov.ge on 27 October 2026. The broader clinical recommendations on routine vaccines, hepatitis A, rabies and tick-borne encephalitis follow the general approach used by the World Health Organization, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the UK’s NHS travel health services for Georgia and the wider Caucasus, none of which currently list any additional entry requirement for ordinary travellers. General context on regional hygiene and trekking conditions was cross-checked against travel reporting at bbc.com/travel and theguardian.com/travel. Rules can change; always verify with your own national travel health service before booking, and with Georgia’s entry portal before flying.
