Tbilisi beyond the Old Town: Sololaki, Vera, Chugureti and the Vake walks

Tbilisi‘s Old Town is the postcard, but four 19th- and 20th-century districts ring it with more architecture per square metre and far fewer crowds. Sololaki, Vera, Chugureti and Vake each reward a self-guided walk of two to three hours: Art Nouveau stairwells and crumbling balconies in Sololaki, academic villas and embassies in Vera, a railway-age merchant town in Chugureti, and Soviet modernism inside a long green park in Vake. None requires a guide, a ticket or advance booking, and all four connect by foot or a short metro or taxi ride, so you can do one a day or stitch two together if you are fit and the weather holds.

What follows are route sketches, not fixed itineraries: start points, a loose order of streets, what to look up at and where to sit down. Addresses and bus numbers change less often than opening hours, so we give streets and landmarks rather than specific café names that might close. Sololaki — Art Nouveau facades and hidden courtyards

Sololaki rises directly south of Freedom Square and Rustaveli Avenue, built from the 1870s onward by Tbilisi’s merchant and professional class. Start at the top of Machabeli or Galaktion Tabidze street and walk uphill toward Betlemi. The architecture mixes Art Nouveau, Moorish and Classical revival facades, often three families’ worth of ornament stacked on one building. The real subject, though, is the courtyards: push open an unlocked gate (many are, during daylight) and you find open timber balconies wrapping around a shared yard, spiral staircases, and washing lines three storeys up. This vernacular courtyard life is part of what Georgia’s national tourism authority highlights as distinctly Tbilisian urban heritage, and several buildings here are on the state list of immovable cultural monuments.

Finish near Vakhtang Gorgasali Street or drop down toward Leselidze/Kote Abkhazi to rejoin the Old Town. Allow two to two and a half hours including stops; wear shoes that can handle broken pavement, and note that many stairwells are genuinely crumbling, so look rather than lean. Vera — academia, parks and the diplomatic quarter

Vera sits west of Rustaveli, uphill from the Mtkvari, and developed later and more formally than Sololaki, with wider streets and villas built for professors, doctors and, after independence, embassies. Begin at Vera Park, a small triangular green space that is a good orientation point, then walk up Chavchavadze Avenue’s lower end before cutting onto the quieter parallel streets — Tabukashvili, Nutsubidze, Shanidze — where early 20th-century houses sit behind iron fences and mature trees. This is a good neighbourhood for slow café stops: Vera has a higher concentration of small specialty coffee rooms and bakeries than almost anywhere else in the city, many in converted ground-floor flats.

The walk naturally continues toward Tbilisi State University’s main building and the start of Chavchavadze Avenue proper, which is also the start of our Vake route below, so the two districts can be combined into a single half-day outing. Budget two hours for Vera alone.

Chugureti — the railway town and Marjanishvili

Chugureti grew up on the flat ground north of the river around the railway, built from the 1870s by Armenian, German and Russian merchant communities who needed warehouses and worker housing near the tracks. Start at Marjanishvili metro station and walk down Kote Marjanishvili Street, where theatre, cinema and market buildings from the early 20th century still function largely as they did, then turn toward the river along Tatishvili or Davit Aghmashenebeli Avenue, Tbilisi’s other great Art Nouveau boulevard, restored in stages over the past decade with new cafés and galleries in old merchant houses.

Chugureti is flatter and easier underfoot than Sololaki, which makes it a good choice in hot weather or for anyone who prefers not to climb. Cross back to the Old Town over the Bridge of Peace or continue north to the railway station itself, a Soviet-era building worth a look from outside. Allow two to two and a half hours; the avenue has the highest density of casual lunch spots of the four walks, so this is the easiest one to combine with a proper meal stop.

Vake — Soviet modernism and the long park

Vake is Tbilisi’s largest and most consistently 20th-century district, built out from the 1930s through the 1980s as the preferred address for academics, artists and, later, the post-Soviet professional class. The walk runs the length of Chavchavadze Avenue from the university area to Vake Park, passing Soviet-period apartment blocks with distinctive concrete detailing, embassies in converted villas, and the wedding-cake scale of some later 20th-century public buildings. The park itself, at the top of the avenue, is large enough for a proper loop among plane trees, a boating lake and open lawns, and sits below the ridge that carries paths up toward Turtle Lake.

This is the longest of the four walks, two and a half to three hours if you go all the way into the park and back, and it is the one most easily shortened — stop at any cross street and take a taxi or bus back down the avenue. Planning your walks: maps, timing and access

None of these four routes needs an app beyond a basic offline map; street names on building corners are usually in both Georgian and Latin script in the central districts, less reliably so further from Rustaveli. Mornings are quieter and cooler for Sololaki’s climbs; late afternoon suits Vake Park and Chugureti’s riverside stretch, when the light is better for photographs. None of the walks requires tickets, but a few courtyard gates in Sololaki are locked after dark for residents’ security, so daytime visits work best. Comfortable shoes matter more than anything else, particularly in Sololaki where pavements and stairwells are uneven; Tbilisi City Hall’s planning documents for the historic districts note ongoing restoration work, so expect some scaffolding in any given year.

Cafés and courtyards: what to look for

Each district has its own domestic architecture worth pausing for rather than rushing past. In Sololaki, look for wrought-iron balcony brackets and carved wooden door surrounds, some dated and signed by the original builder. In Vera, the interest is in garden plots and low fences rather than facades. In Chugureti, look up at the restored shopfronts along Aghmashenebeli Avenue, where ground-floor commercial use has returned largely to its 19th-century pattern. In Vake, the contrast between prewar villas and later Soviet apartment blocks on the same street is itself the point of interest, a layered history visible without entering a single building.

Coffee and food stops are easiest in Vera and along Aghmashenebeli Avenue in Chugureti, where small independent cafés occupy converted ground-floor flats and former shops; Sololaki and Vake have fewer but still workable options near their main streets. None of the four walks requires booking a table, but weekend mornings get busy in Vera’s better-known cafés.
