Yes, Batumi is worth a visit for most travellers to Georgia, but treat it as a subtropical port city with a lively promenade and casino-and-cocktail nightlife, not a Mediterranean beach resort. The best window for swimming and warm evenings is mid-June to mid-September 2026; shoulder weeks in May and late September to early October bring quieter streets, lower prices and still-pleasant weather.
The nuance is Batumi’s climate and beach. Adjara sits on the wettest stretch of Georgia’s coast, so short, heavy downpours can interrupt any month, and the beach itself is grey pebble, not sand, with a steep drop-off. What makes the city worthwhile is the combination of a walkable seafront boulevard, a dense Belle Époque old town, good seafood and Adjarian khachapuri, and a cluster of genuinely strong day trips into the hills behind it.
Batumi by season
| Period | Sea and weather | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| June-August | Warm sea, hot humid days, sudden thunderstorms common | Peak season: busiest boulevard, highest hotel rates, best swimming |
| May & September | Sea still swimmable, fewer crowds, lower humidity | Best value window for most visitors |
| October-April | Cool, wet, sea too cold for most swimmers | City and food trip only, not a beach trip; good for day trips and quiet walks |
What Batumi offers, and what it does not
- Offers: a 7-kilometre seaside boulevard, Old Batumi’s 19th-century streets, the Alphabet Tower and Ferris wheel, casinos and late dining, a working port town feel, and fresh Black Sea fish.
- Does not offer: fine sand, calm turquoise water, or a quiet resort pace in July and August, when the promenade and restaurants are at their busiest.
- Offers: an easy base for day trips into greener, quieter Adjara within 30-90 minutes by car.
- Does not offer: major ancient monuments inside the city itself; those are mostly short drives away, at Gonio and in the Machakhela valley.

Day trips: Gonio, the Botanical Garden, Machakhela
Gonio-Apsaros, a Roman-era fortress about 15 kilometres south of the city near the Turkish border, is the easiest half-day out and can be combined with the beach town of Kvariati. The Batumi Botanical Garden, roughly 20 minutes north along the coast, is one of the richest living plant collections on the Black Sea and a pleasant walk even in light rain, with sea views from its clifftop paths; check current opening hours and the entrance fee directly with the garden before you go, since these can change between seasons. Machakhela National Park, inland toward the Turkish frontier, protects old-growth Colchic forest and a valley of historic arched stone bridges and watermills; it is a longer half-day for travellers with their own transport or a guide, and it is managed as part of Georgia’s protected-areas network under the Agency of Protected Areas.
Getting there and prices
Batumi has its own international airport a few kilometres from the centre, and flights connect it to Tbilisi and several regional hubs; check current schedules on the Batumi International Airport site before booking. By road, Tbilisi to Batumi is a full-day drive of roughly six hours each way.
- Fixed private transfer, Batumi airport to Batumi or Kobuleti: from €40 per car, see current rates at gtour.ge/data.
- Private car with driver, Tbilisi to Batumi (one way): €220 sedan, €270 minivan, see gtour.ge/data.
- A structured two-day loop through the city and the Ajara mountains, including Gonio and Machakhela-style scenery, is offered as Batumi & the Ajara Mountains, priced from €357 per person in a group of four to six, see gtour.ge/data for the full tier.
Lari-to-euro conversions for any cash budgeting should use the National Bank of Georgia’s daily rate rather than a fixed figure, since it moves; the latest reference is on gtour.ge/data.

Who should go, and when
Go in June-September if the beach matters to you and you do not mind crowds and heat; go in May or late September if you want the same city with fewer people and lower prices; visit any time of year if your interest is the Old Town, the food, and the Ajara mountains rather than swimming. Georgia’s official tourism portal profiles Adjara’s coast and mountains together, which reflects how most repeat visitors actually use the region, as a base rather than a single destination.
Where this comes from
This answer draws on the regional tourism pages of the Government of Adjara, the national overview on Georgia Travel, protected-area information from the Agency of Protected Areas, and transfer and tour pricing current on gtour.ge as of 27 October 2026. Opening hours and entrance fees for sites such as the Botanical Garden change seasonally and should be confirmed directly before a visit.
