Overview

Makhinjauri is a small seaside resort on the Black Sea coast of Ajara, in southwestern Georgia, lying immediately north of Batumi within Khelvachauri Municipality. It sits on the narrow strip of land between the coastal road-and-rail corridor and the sea, roughly 5 h 40 min by car from Tbilisi, 2 h 20 min from Kutaisi, and only about 20 minutes from central Batumi. Because of this proximity, Makhinjauri functions less as a standalone destination and more as a quiet extension of the Batumi coastline, favoured by visitors who want sea air without the density of the city centre.

The settlement matters chiefly for two reasons: its long-standing identity as a climatic health resort dating to the Soviet period, and its position next to the Batumi Botanical Garden, one of the most visited scientific gardens in the Caucasus. Pebble beaches, a mild humid subtropical climate, and a scattering of guesthouses and new apart-hotels make it a practical base for travellers exploring the wider Batumi region, and GTour regularly includes it in private itineraries that combine the coast with Ajara’s inland valleys.

History

The coastal strip around modern Makhinjauri lies within the historical territory of ancient Colchis and, later, the Ottoman-administered district of Batumi. Following the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, the Batumi region was ceded to the Russian Empire under the Treaty of Berlin, which opened the coast to rapid infrastructure development, including the railway line linking Batumi to Tbilisi and the Baku oilfields, completed in stages through the 1880s and 1890s.

In 1912, the Russian botanist and geographer Andrei Krasnov founded a garden on the adjoining headland of Mtsvane Kontskhi (Green Cape), just south of Makhinjauri, to study subtropical plant acclimatisation along the coast; this institution developed into the Batumi Botanical Garden, which remains one of the defining landmarks of the area. During the Soviet period, Makhinjauri itself was developed as a climatic and balneological resort, its humid sea-level air considered beneficial for respiratory convalescence, a role typical of many small settlements along the Adjara coast at the time.

After Georgian independence in 1991 and the political stabilisation of Ajara in the early 2000s, Batumi’s rapid tourism growth spilled northward along the coast, and Makhinjauri’s guesthouses, sanatoria and railway station were gradually joined by newer apart-hotels serving both domestic and international visitors. The settlement today remains administratively part of Khelvachauri Municipality, within greater Ajara, and continues to serve primarily as a quieter residential and resort annex to Batumi.

What to see

Makhinjauri Beach

The town’s pebble beach runs along a gently curving bay, generally calmer and less crowded than the central Batumi waterfront a few kilometres south. Sun loungers, small cafés and seasonal swimming facilities operate in the warmer months. The shoreline is a convenient stop for travellers staying outside the city who still want sea access without urban noise.

Batumi Botanical Garden

Located on the headland of Mtsvane Kontskhi (Green Cape), directly adjacent to Makhinjauri, this garden was founded in 1912 by botanist Andrei Krasnov and today covers a terraced hillside planted with collections from East Asia, the Himalayas, the Mediterranean, Mexico, and the Caucasus. Paths wind along the cliff above the sea, offering some of the best coastal views in the Batumi area. It is among the most visited scientific-tourism sites on Georgia’s Black Sea coast.

Makhinjauri Railway Station

The station is a stop on the historic Tbilisi–Batumi railway corridor developed in the late nineteenth century and still used by Georgian Railway services today. Its modest platform and surrounding streets give a sense of the settlement’s original role as a transit and health-resort point along the coast, before Batumi’s modern expansion absorbed much of the surrounding coastline.

Coastal promenade and Khelvachauri hills

A walking path runs along parts of the shoreline connecting Makhinjauri to the botanical garden and onward toward Batumi, with views across the Black Sea to the west and the forested foothills of Khelvachauri Municipality to the east. The short walk is a practical, low-effort way to link the resort with Batumi’s attractions without a car.

Getting there

From Tbilisi, the drive to Makhinjauri takes about 5 h 40 min via the Rikoti Pass and the Samtredia–Kobuleti–Batumi road, the main east–west route across Georgia; check conditions in advance on the road status page before winter travel. Marshrutka minibuses run frequently from Tbilisi’s Didube station to Batumi, with onward local transport or a short taxi ride to Makhinjauri. Georgian Railway operates day and overnight trains on the Tbilisi–Batumi line, some of which stop at Makhinjauri station itself; schedules can be checked through Georgian Railway.

From Kutaisi, the journey is roughly 2 h 20 min by road along the same Samtredia–Kobuleti corridor, with marshrutka services available from Kutaisi’s main bus station. From Batumi, Makhinjauri is only about 20 minutes away by taxi, local bus, or the coastal road, making it an easy half-day add-on to a Batumi stay rather than a separate base for most travellers.

When to go

Makhinjauri shares Batumi’s humid subtropical climate, with the main swimming season running from June to September and the warmest, busiest weeks in July and August. Spring and autumn bring milder temperatures, lighter crowds, and better conditions for walking in the botanical garden, while winters are mild but wet, with the coast considerably quieter than in summer.

Where to stay and eat

Practical notes

Beaches along this stretch of coast are pebble, not sand, so water shoes are useful. Facilities in Makhinjauri itself are limited compared with central Batumi, so many visitors treat it as a quiet base and travel into the city for wider dining and nightlife options. ATMs, pharmacies, and larger supermarkets are concentrated in Batumi rather than Makhinjauri. For broader planning across the region, see GTour’s guides and the best-of Georgia selections.
