Overview

Kaspi is a town in the Shida Kartli region of eastern Georgia, set on the banks of the Mtkvari (Kura) river roughly 60 kilometres west of Tbilisi, about 1 hour 10 minutes by road. It is the administrative center of Kaspi Municipality and home to around 13,423 people. The town sits on the main highway and rail corridor that links Tbilisi with Gori, Khashuri, Kutaisi and the Black Sea coast, making it a natural stopping point for travellers moving between the Georgian capital and western Georgia.

Kaspi matters less for a single landmark than for what surrounds it: vineyards producing wine from the local Chinuri grape, the Mtkvari valley’s layered agricultural and industrial history, and easy access to the wider Shida Kartli countryside. For visitors based in Shida Kartli or travelling the Tbilisi–Kutaisi road, Kaspi works well as a short stop, a wine-tasting detour, or a base for a private day exploring the region with GTour.

History

The Mtkvari valley around Kaspi has been settled since antiquity, lying within the historic territory of the kingdom of Kartli (Iberia), through which the river valley carried trade and military routes between eastern and western Georgia for centuries. Like much of Shida Kartli, the area changed hands repeatedly during the medieval period as Georgian kingdoms contended with Persian, Ottoman and regional powers, and small fortifications were built along the river to control movement through the valley.

In the nineteenth century the area became part of the Tiflis Governorate under the Russian Empire, and the river crossing and later the railway line through the Mtkvari valley reinforced Kaspi’s role as a transit point between Tbilisi and the towns of central Georgia. The most significant change to the modern town came in the twentieth century, when a large cement plant was built near Kaspi to exploit local limestone deposits; the plant became one of Georgia’s principal cement producers and shaped the town’s economy and layout through the Soviet period and after. Today Kaspi functions as the administrative seat of its municipality within Shida Kartli, a region whose cultural heritage falls under the oversight of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation and whose tourism development is promoted nationally through the Georgian National Tourism Administration.

What to see

Metekhi fortress area

In the Kaspi municipality, remnants of a medieval fortification overlook the Mtkvari river, part of a chain of defensive points that once guarded the valley route. The site is modest compared to Georgia’s larger fortress complexes, but it offers a quiet view over the river and surrounding farmland. It is best visited as part of a guided stop rather than a standalone destination.

Kaspi cement plant and townscape

The cement works on the edge of town has defined Kaspi’s modern identity since the Soviet period and remains a visible part of the local economy. For visitors interested in Georgia’s industrial history rather than only its medieval monuments, the plant and the workers’ housing built around it offer a contrasting layer to the region’s agricultural landscape.

Shida Kartli vineyards around Kaspi

The hills around Kaspi belong to the Shida Kartli wine zone, known in particular for the white Chinuri grape, used both for dry wines and for traditional sparkling production. Several small family estates and wineries near the town welcome visitors for tastings and cellar visits, giving a direct look at qvevri winemaking practised outside Georgia’s better-known Kakheti region.

Mtkvari riverside and Ksani confluence

Near Kaspi the Mtkvari is joined by the smaller Ksani river, and the stretch of valley around the confluence offers open views across cultivated fields and low hills. It is a pleasant, unhurried spot to break a journey along the Tbilisi–Kutaisi road rather than a formal sightseeing stop.

Getting there

From Tbilisi, Kaspi is reached in about 1 hour 10 minutes by the main road toward Gori and Kutaisi (the S1/E60 corridor); marshrutkas heading from Tbilisi’s Didube station toward Gori or Kutaisi pass through or near Kaspi and can be asked to stop there. Georgian Railway operates passenger services on the Tbilisi–Khashuri–Kutaisi–Batumi line that call at Kaspi station; current timetables are published by Georgian Railway. From Kutaisi, the drive east along the same highway takes roughly 3 hours 10 minutes. From Batumi, allow about 5 hours 20 minutes via Kutaisi and the same inland route. Current conditions on the national road network can be checked through the Roads Department.

When to go

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are the most comfortable seasons, with mild temperatures suited to visiting vineyards and the open countryside around the town. Early autumn coincides with the grape harvest, or rtveli, in the surrounding Shida Kartli vineyards, which is the liveliest time to visit local wineries. Summer can be hot in the Mtkvari valley, while winter is cold but generally mild and manageable for a short stop en route between Tbilisi and western Georgia.

Where to stay and eat

Kaspi itself has limited formal lodging, so most visitors either day-trip from Tbilisi or stay at properties in the surrounding countryside. Chateau Mephis Kalaki offers hotel accommodation near the town for travellers who prefer to base themselves locally. For wine and food, Merebashvili Estate, Irma and Kato’s Vineyards and Marani and Tedzami Wines are verified wineries in the area offering tastings and, in some cases, home-style meals alongside their wine. GTour’s verified register lists more options below for stays, meals and wineries in and around Kaspi.

Practical notes

Georgian lari is the only currency widely accepted outside larger hotels; cash is advisable for small wineries and village shops. English signage is limited in Kaspi itself, though staff at wineries and hotels in the GTour register generally communicate in English or can arrange interpretation. Road quality on the main highway is good, but check the road status page before winter travel. GTour’s regional guides and private tours can combine Kaspi with other Shida Kartli stops for a full day itinerary.
