Overview

Hatsvali Ski Resort sits on the slopes above Mestia, the administrative centre of Upper Svaneti, in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region of northwestern Georgia. A cable car rises directly from the edge of Mestia town, at roughly 1,500 metres, to the ski zone near 2,340 metres, making Hatsvali the most accessible winter-sports area in Svaneti and a short outing from the region’s medieval defensive towers.

The resort matters because it links two of Georgia’s strongest tourism draws — alpine skiing beneath peaks such as Ushba and Tetnuldi, and the UNESCO-listed historic villages of Upper Svaneti — within a single day trip from Mestia. For travellers building a winter or shoulder-season itinerary in the Caucasus, Hatsvali offers skiing without the long approach required by larger resorts elsewhere in the country.

History

Svaneti’s inhabited valleys, including the area around Mestia, were historically isolated by mountain passes closed much of the year, a condition that preserved the defensive stone towers and churches now recognised internationally; the medieval village group of Chazhashi, near Ushguli, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of Upper Svaneti in 1996. Modern road and air links to Mestia improved significantly from the late 2000s as the Georgian government invested in Svaneti’s tourism infrastructure, part of a wider effort.

Hatsvali’s cable car and initial ski runs were built as part of that development push, opening to visitors in the early 2010s and giving Mestia its first lift-served ski area. A second, larger resort at Tetnuldi, further from town, followed later in the decade, extending Svaneti’s ski season and terrain. Together the two resorts positioned Svaneti, long known chiefly for its towers and trekking routes described under Svaneti, as an emerging winter destination within Georgia.

What to see

Hatsvali Cable Car

The gondola departs from a lower station at the edge of Mestia and climbs to the ski area in a matter of minutes, cutting out the steep walk or drive that would otherwise be needed. It is the fastest way to reach open views over the Mestia valley and surrounding ridgelines.

Ski Slopes and Mountain Views

Hatsvali’s pistes suit beginner and intermediate skiers, with gentler gradients than the higher terrain at Tetnuldi. On clear days the upper station gives unobstructed views toward Ushba’s twin summits and the ridge separating Svaneti from Abkhazia.

Mestia Old Town

At the base of the resort, Mestia retains clusters of Svan defensive towers dating from the medieval period, along with the Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography. A short walk or taxi ride links the town centre to the cable car base station.

Tetnuldi Resort

Georgia’s larger and higher Svaneti ski area lies roughly 30–40 minutes from Mestia by road and offers longer, steeper runs. Visitors based in Mestia often combine a day at each resort, and GTour can arrange the transfer as part of a wider private tour.

Getting there

From Tbilisi, Hatsvali is reached via the main highway to Zugdidi and then the mountain road up the Enguri valley to Mestia, a drive of roughly 8 hours 40 minutes covering the full distance; marshrutka minibuses run from Tbilisi’s Didube station to Mestia, with a change in Zugdidi often required. A rail option exists as far as Zugdidi on the Georgian Railway network, continuing to Mestia by road.

From Kutaisi, the same Zugdidi–Mestia road applies, with a typical driving time of about 5 hours 5 minutes. From Batumi, the route also passes through Zugdidi, taking around 5 hours 35 minutes. Because the mountain section can be affected by snow or landslides, travellers should check current road status before departure, and see the regional guide to getting to Svaneti, Mestia and Ushguli for seasonal detail.

When to go

The ski season generally runs from December to April, with the most reliable snow cover between January and March. Outside winter, the cable car and surrounding trails can serve as a base for high-altitude walks and views, though summer lift operation should be confirmed locally, as schedules vary by season and demand.

Where to stay and eat

Options close to the resort and in Mestia include Chill Inn Hatsvali for food near the slopes, and hotels such as Lilat Hotel, Hotel Shgedi Mestia, Suntower Mestia, SamiMta and Banguriani. Self-catering visitors may prefer Kakhshiani Mestia Cottages, and those wanting an active day can book horseback riding tours in the Svanetian highlands. GTour’s verified register lists further options in the area; see the regional best-of guide for a fuller shortlist.

Practical notes

Ski and snowboard equipment can be rented locally in Mestia and near the resort; lift tickets are purchased at the base station. Mountain weather changes quickly, so warm, layered clothing is advisable even on sunny days, and the Zugdidi–Mestia road should be checked for closures in heavy snow via road status updates. Mobile coverage in Mestia is generally reliable, though it weakens on higher parts of the mountain; GTour’s local guides can assist with planning transfers between Hatsvali, Tetnuldi and Mestia’s historic sites.

Questions travellers ask

How far is Hatsvali from Mestia town?

The cable car’s lower station is at the edge of Mestia, within walking distance or a short taxi ride of most hotels, and the ride up takes only a few minutes.

Is Hatsvali suitable for beginner skiers?

Yes, its slopes are generally gentler than those at Tetnuldi, making it a common choice for beginners and families, while more experienced skiers often add a day at the larger resort.

What is the difference between Hatsvali and Tetnuldi?

Hatsvali is smaller, closer to Mestia and reached directly by cable car from town, while Tetnuldi lies about 30–40 minutes away by road and offers higher, longer runs for more advanced skiers.

Can Hatsvali be visited in summer?

The lift may run in warmer months for sightseeing, but operating hours vary, so travellers should confirm locally or through a tour operator before planning a summer visit.

Do I need a car to reach Hatsvali?

A car is not required within Mestia, since the cable car base is close to town, but reaching Mestia itself from Tbilisi, Kutaisi or Batumi requires a car, marshrutka or train-and-road combination.

Is equipment rental available at the resort?

Ski and snowboard rental is available in Mestia and near the base station, so visitors do not need to bring their own gear.

How long does it take to reach Mestia from Tbilisi?

By road the journey takes about 8 hours 40 minutes via Zugdidi; marshrutka services run from Tbilisi’s Didube station, sometimes requiring a change in Zugdidi.

Is Hatsvali connected to Svaneti’s UNESCO sites?

Hatsvali itself is not part of the UNESCO-listed Upper Svaneti property, which covers the medieval village of Chazhashi near Ushguli, but Mestia’s own towers and museum are a short walk from the resort’s base station.

When is the best time for snow at Hatsvali?

January to March typically offers the most consistent snow cover for skiing, though the full season runs from December into April depending on conditions.

Are there hotels directly at the resort?

Most accommodation is based in Mestia town rather than at the lift station itself; options range from hotels to cottages, with GTour’s verified register listing several nearby choices.
