Overview

Gardabani is a town of about 10,753 people in Kvemo Kartli, southeastern Georgia, roughly an hour’s drive from Tbilisi along the road toward the Red Bridge border crossing with Azerbaijan. It is the administrative center of Gardabani Municipality, a largely flat, agricultural district that stretches from the confluence of the Mtkvari (Kura) and Khrami rivers in the west to the semi-desert plateau bordering Azerbaijan in the east. History

The plain around Gardabani lies within historic Kvemo Kartli, a region long contested between the Georgian kingdoms and their neighbours. From the sixth century, the nearby semi-desert hosted the monastic foundation of David Gareja, associated with David Garejeli, one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers who arrived in Georgia to strengthen Christian monastic life. The wider district, historically known under the Ottoman-Persian era name Borchalo, came under Russian imperial administration after the annexation of the Kartli-Kakheti kingdom in 1801.

Gardabani itself developed as a rural settlement in this administrative district through the nineteenth century, growing in the Soviet period as agriculture and infrastructure around the Tbilisi–Azerbaijan corridor expanded; it was formally established as a town with its present name during the Soviet era. A large thermal power station was built near the town in the mid-twentieth century, reinforcing its role as an industrial and transit point for the region. Since Georgian independence in 1991, Gardabani has served as the seat of Gardabani Municipality, part of the wider administrative region of Kvemo Kartli.

David Gareja monastery complex

Founded in the sixth century and expanded over many centuries, David Gareja is a cluster of cave monasteries carved into the arid hills on the border of Georgia and Azerbaijan, within Gardabani Municipality. Summer can be very hot and dry on the semi-desert plateau around David Gareja, while winter brings cold winds and occasional ice on the monastery paths; travellers planning that excursion should check conditions in advance.

Practical notes

Gardabani lies close to the Georgia–Azerbaijan border, and parts of the David Gareja complex sit directly on the frontier; carry identification when visiting that area, as access to the Udabno side has at times been restricted.
