Overview

Bolnisi is a small town in Kvemo Kartli, southern Georgia, about 1 hour 5 minutes by road from Tbilisi, roughly 4 hours 25 minutes from Kutaisi and 6 hours 45 minutes from Batumi. It sits in the valley of the Mashavera river, surrounded by vineyards, orchards and low hills that mark the transition from the Kartli plain toward the Trialeti and Lesser Caucasus ranges. With a population of just under 9,000, Bolnisi functions as the administrative centre of Bolnisi Municipality, one of the most ethnically mixed districts in the country, home to Georgian, Azerbaijani, German-descended and Greek communities over the past two centuries.

The town matters for two separate reasons that rarely overlap elsewhere in Georgia: it stands near one of the earliest dated church buildings in the Caucasus, and its streets still carry the grid plan and stone houses of a 19th-century German colonist settlement. Add to this a growing cluster of family wineries working with qvevri and local grape varieties, and Bolnisi becomes a worthwhile half-day or full-day stop for travellers interested in early Christian architecture, 19th-century migration history, and rural Georgian wine culture, all within easy reach of the capital.

History

The area around Bolnisi has been settled since antiquity, but its name is tied above all to the Bolnisi Sioni basilica, built, according to an inscription on the building itself, between 478 and 493 AD under King Vakhtang I Gorgasali. The church carries the earliest securely dated inscription in the Georgian Asomtavruli script, which has made it a reference point for the study of Georgian written language and for the so-called Bolnisi cross, a distinctive cross form carved on the building that later became a national symbol, used on the flag of Georgia between 1990 and 2004. The basilica and its churchyard are protected as an immovable cultural heritage monument under Georgian law, within the remit of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation.

The modern town has a separate, later origin. In 1818, during the reign of Tsar Alexander I, a group of Swabian German colonists left Württemberg and founded a settlement here that they named Katharinenfeld, after Catherine of Württemberg; it grew into one of the largest German colonies in the Caucasus, with a Lutheran church, schoolhouse and the regular street grid that is still visible in the town centre today. The German community farmed, traded and built much of the stone architecture that still distinguishes central Bolnisi from typical Georgian provincial towns. This history ended abruptly in 1941, when the Soviet authorities deported the ethnic German population of Georgia, including Katharinenfeld, to Central Asia as part of wartime population removals affecting Soviet Germans. The settlement was renamed Bolnisi in 1943 and resettled with Georgian and other families. In the Soviet period the town developed around agriculture and light industry; since the 1990s it has become known again chiefly for its historic churches, its mixed population and a revival of small-scale, often family-run winemaking in the surrounding villages.

What to see

Bolnisi Sioni Basilica

A three-nave basilica a short drive from the town centre, built in the late 5th century and considered one of the oldest surviving churches in Georgia. It preserves early carved crosses, including the form known as the Bolnisi cross, and a dedicatory inscription in Asomtavruli script that historians use to date the building precisely. The site is quiet, rural and still used for worship.

Tsughrughasheni Church

A smaller domed church a few kilometres from Bolnisi, built in the early 13th century and noted for its finely carved stone ornament from the Georgian Golden Age. It stands in open countryside and is usually visited together with Bolnisi Sioni as a single architectural route.

German colonial town centre

The core streets of Bolnisi retain the orderly layout and stone houses built by the Swabian settlers of Katharinenfeld from 1818 onward. Walking the old grid gives a sense of a 19th-century European colonial town transplanted into the Georgian countryside, distinct from the architecture of older Georgian towns nearby.

Family wineries of Bolnisi Municipality

The district around Bolnisi has a cluster of small wineries producing qvevri and European-style wines from local and international grape varieties grown on the Mashavera valley slopes. Several are set up for visits and tastings and can be combined with a church and history itinerary in a single day.

Getting there

From Tbilisi, Bolnisi is reached by the Tbilisi–Marneuli–Bolnisi road, a drive of about 1 hour 5 minutes by private car or taxi; marshrutka minibuses to Bolnisi leave from Tbilisi’s Ortachala bus terminal on a regular daytime schedule, taking somewhat longer than a private transfer. There is no passenger rail service to Bolnisi, so road travel is the only practical option; current conditions can be checked via the road status page or the Roads Department of Georgia. From Kutaisi, the journey is about 4 hours 25 minutes by road via Tbilisi or the southern route through Kvemo Kartli, and from Batumi around 6 hours 45 minutes; both are best arranged as a planned day or with an overnight stop, for which GTour’s private tours can build in wineries and heritage sites along the way.

When to go

Bolnisi can be visited year-round, since its main sights are churches and town architecture that do not depend on season. Spring (April–May) brings green vineyards and mild weather for walking between the basilica and Tsughrughasheni; autumn, particularly September and October, coincides with the grape harvest (rtveli) and is the best time to combine a visit with winery tastings. Summer is warm and dry, suitable for day trips from Tbilisi, while winter visits are quieter and focused mainly on the churches rather than outdoor winery time.

Where to stay and eat

Bolnisi itself has limited formal accommodation, and most visitors base themselves in Tbilisi or combine the town with an overnight stay at one of the wineries in the surrounding villages. GTour’s verified register includes a number of wine estates near Bolnisi that offer tastings, meals and, in some cases, guest rooms: Mukhiguli 1770, Lukas Marani, Villa Kelasuri, Khmelo Winery, Japharidze Winery, Madlieri Winery, Subeliani Winery and Wine Cellar Rachisubani. GTour’s verified register lists more options for the wider Kvemo Kartli region below, and the guides section covers regional wine-touring routes in more detail.

Practical notes

Signage in Bolnisi is primarily in Georgian, with some Azerbaijani given the municipality’s mixed population; having a map or offline navigation is useful away from the main square. Mobile coverage is generally reliable along the Tbilisi–Bolnisi road and in town. Church visits require modest dress, and both Bolnisi Sioni and Tsughrughasheni are active or semi-active religious sites, so visitors should be quiet and respectful during services. Winery visits are best arranged in advance, particularly outside the September–October harvest season when some estates operate on a reduced schedule; GTour can confirm opening times and arrange transport as part of a private tour.
