- Use Zugdidi, and this hotel, as a staging point before or after the Mestia road rather than a final destination in its own right.
- Budget a half-day for the Dadiani Palace Museum, botanical garden and central market, all within easy reach of the town centre.
- Book onward transport to Svaneti in advance in late October, as mountain weather can already be turning by this point in the season.
Zugdidi rarely gets top billing on a Georgian itinerary, but it earns its keep as a hinge point: the regional centre of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, home to the Dadiani princely family’s old seat, and the last proper town before the road climbs into Svaneti. Hotel Sunset Terrace, on Boris Kakhiani’s street in a residential part of town, is a straightforward option for travellers who want to break the journey here rather than push straight through.
October suits this kind of stopover well. The Dadiani Palace Museum and its botanical garden are a short distance from the centre, and they are far more comfortable to walk around in autumn’s mild, dry air than in the summer heat. The central park and the local market add an easy half-day of unhurried sightseeing — the kind of pace that works when you are also trying to rest before or after a long mountain drive. Zugdidi’s road and rail links to Tbilisi, Kutaisi and the Black Sea coast mean the town functions as a genuine crossroads, not a dead end, so a night here slots neatly into a wider western Georgia route.
Who it suits and how to get there
This is a hotel for people who want a base, not a destination in itself: travellers heading to Mestia and the high Caucasus who prefer to arrive fresh rather than drive the whole way from Tbilisi or Kutaisi in one stretch; those exploring Samegrelo’s own history and culture around the Dadiani sites; and anyone using Zugdidi’s transport links to connect onward to the coast. Zugdidi is reachable by train and road from Tbilisi and Kutaisi, and the town itself is the usual launch point for marshrutkas and taxis continuing up to Mestia — a route that, by late October, can already be affected by the first mountain weather, so building in a night at a lowland base before the ascent is a sensible precaution rather than a luxury.
Hotel Sunset Terrace’s location on a residential street means it is set back from the busiest parts of town, which is worth factoring in if you are arriving late or without a car. It is listed in the Georgian National Tourism Administration’s official register and was checked by GTour on 17 October 2026 as part of our ongoing verification work; as with any property, it is worth confirming current details directly before you travel, and letting us know if anything has changed.
