Cave cities of Georgia: Vardzia, Uplistsikhe and David Gareja — history, visiting rules and how to combine them

Vardzia, Uplistsikhe and David Gareja are Georgia’s three great cave settlements, and each answers a different question. Vardzia, cut into a cliff above the Mtkvari river in Samtskhe-Javakheti, was a 12th-century fortress-monastery built under King George III and expanded by Queen Tamar. Uplistsikhe, on a bare rock outcrop near Gori, began as a pagan sun-worship centre more than a thousand years before Christianity reached Georgia and kept working as a town into the Mongol period. David Gareja, a scatter of monasteries founded in the 6th century by one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers, sits in semi-desert on the Georgia-Azerbaijan border and is still an active monastic community, not a museum.

None of the three can be done comfortably on the same day as the other two, because they lie in three different directions from Tbilisi. Uplistsikhe pairs naturally with Gori, Vardzia with Akhaltsikhe and the Rabati fortress, and David Gareja is its own day trip east toward Kakheti and the Azerbaijani frontier. This guide sets out what each site actually is, the practical rules for visiting (tickets, dress, shade, opening hours), the current situation at the Gareja border, and how to sequence a visit if you want to see all three over a longer trip.

Three cave cities, one label, different stories

It is worth separating the sites before planning, because “cave city” covers very different periods and purposes.

All three are protected as immovable cultural heritage monuments of Georgia and appear on the registers kept by the heritage protection agencies; none is yet a full UNESCO World Heritage Site, though Georgia has put forward cave and monastic landscapes for consideration in the past, so do not expect a UNESCO plaque at the gate.

Vardzia: Queen Tamar’s fortress carved into the cliff

Vardzia was begun by George III as a defensive stronghold on the border with Seljuk-held territory, then greatly enlarged by his daughter Queen Tamar, whose long and stable reign (1184-1213) is still remembered as Georgia’s golden age. At its height the complex held roughly 6,000 rooms across thirteen tiers cut into the Erusheti mountain, including a throne hall, a wine cellar system, a bakery and the Church of the Dormition, whose frescoes include one of the few surviving contemporary portraits of Tamar herself. A massive earthquake in 1283 sheared away much of the cliff face, exposing rooms that had been hidden behind an outer wall and leaving the complex looking like the honeycombed ruin visitors see today. A few hundred of the original chambers remain accessible by a signed path with ladders and a tunnel; the site is managed as a historical-architectural museum-reserve and sits close to the Turkish border in Samtskhe-Javakheti.

Uplistsikhe: a pagan town that outlasted its gods

Uplistsikhe predates Christianity in Georgia by well over a thousand years. Archaeological layers show continuous habitation from the early Iron Age, and by the first centuries BC it was a fortified sun-worship centre and a stop on trade routes linking the Black Sea to Persia and beyond. Its rock-cut structures include a hall with a coffered ceiling imitating wooden beams, deep wine-storage pits, and an oval, amphitheatre-shaped space that archaeologists believe was used for pagan ritual rather than theatre. Christianity reached the site in the 4th-9th centuries and a small basilica, locally called the Prince’s Church, was built directly on top of older rock-cut rooms, a visible layering of pagan and Christian Georgia in a single building. The town declined after Mongol invasions in the 13th century and further damage from Timur’s campaigns, and was largely abandoned by the early modern period. It sits a short drive from Gori, which makes it one of the easiest cave sites to combine with a trip to the Stalin-era town and Ateni Sioni‘s frescoes.

David Gareja: desert monasteries on a contested line

David Gareja is not a ruin in the same sense as the other two. Founded in the 6th century by David Garejeli, one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers credited with spreading monasticism in Georgia, it grew into a network of roughly twenty monasteries scattered across a semi-desert ridge of the Gareja range. The main Lavra of St David, with the saint’s tomb, remains a functioning monastery with resident monks, and visitors are expected to dress and behave accordingly: covered shoulders and knees for everyone, headscarves for women, quiet voices near the churches, and no photography inside working chapels unless a monk says it is fine.

The complication is the border. When the Georgian-Azerbaijani frontier was drawn in the Soviet period it did not follow the line of the monastic complex, and after independence the unresolved demarcation left part of the Gareja ridge, including the Udabno monastery with its celebrated 10th-13th century cave frescoes, close to or inside territory patrolled by Azerbaijani forces. Periodic tension, including a serious stand-off in 2019, has at times closed the path up to the Udabno frescoes to visitors even though the Lavra below remains open. This is not a settled situation: access to Udabno can change with little notice, and conservative travellers should check the current position before planning a hike up to the frescoes rather than assuming the 2026 situation matches a previous visit. Tickets, opening hours and what to expect on site

• Vardzia and Uplistsikhe both charge a modest entrance fee with reduced rates for students and children; both are typically open year-round with shorter winter hours, and both can close or shorten hours in poor weather. Confirm the current fee and hours directly before you go, since these are adjusted from time to time by the managing agency.
• David Gareja’s Lavra does not charge an entrance fee, since it is a working monastery rather than a ticketed museum; a donation box is usually present and welcome.
• All three sites involve uneven rock steps, narrow passages and in Vardzia’s case a dark tunnel and ladders; flat, closed shoes are not optional, and anyone with mobility concerns should ask in advance which sections are manageable.
• Drones, large tripods and commercial photography generally require separate permission at all three sites; ask the on-site office rather than assuming.

Heat, shade and the best time to visit

All three sites are built into bare rock with very little natural shade, and Uplistsikhe and David Gareja in particular sit in semi-arid landscapes where midsummer heat is a genuine health concern rather than a minor discomfort. Temperatures at Uplistsikhe and in the Gareja steppe regularly exceed 30-35°C on summer afternoons, with almost no shelter along the walking routes, and Vardzia, although partly shielded by the overhanging cliff, still involves climbing in direct sun for long stretches.

Practical advice that applies to all three: visit in the first two hours after opening or in the last two before closing, carry more water than feels necessary, wear a hat and high-factor sunscreen, and avoid the early-afternoon window in July and August if you can reschedule. Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) give mild temperatures, good light for photography and a lower chance of the sudden thunderstorms that can affect the Gareja gravel roads. Winter visits are possible at Vardzia and Uplistsikhe, though snow and ice on the rock steps call for extra care and shorter opening hours should be expected; the Gareja road can become difficult after heavy rain or snow, so a 4×4 or a guide who knows the current road condition is sensible outside summer.

Guided or independent: what actually works

Uplistsikhe is the easiest of the three to do independently: it is a short taxi ride from Gori, which itself is reachable by train or marshrutka from Tbilisi, and the site is well signed with information boards in English. Vardzia is harder without a car, since public transport from Tbilisi to Akhaltsikhe and then on to Vardzia involves at least one change and infrequent onward connections; travellers based in Akhaltsikhe or Borjomi for a night or two find it far more relaxed. David Gareja has no public transport at all; the roughly 90-kilometre drive from Tbilisi via Sagarejo includes a stretch of unpaved road, and a private car, a tour, or a rented 4×4 is the only realistic way in.

A guide adds real value at all three sites, since the layered history (pagan Uplistsikhe under a Christian church, Tamar’s apartments inside a bombed-out cliff face, frescoes on a disputed hillside) is not always obvious from the information boards alone, and a guide who visits regularly will know the current Gareja border situation before you set off. For a day trip to Uplistsikhe with Gori, see Gori & Uplistsikhe — Cave City Day Trip or Mtskheta, Gori and Uplistsikhe — Kartli in a Day. For Vardzia, Vardzia Cave City — Day Trip runs from Tbilisi in a long day, while Vardzia, Rabati & Borjomi — 2 Days or The South in 3 Days — Borjomi, Vardzia, Rabati and Abastumani spread the distance more comfortably with an overnight in Akhaltsikhe or Borjomi. For David Gareja, David Gareji — Desert Monasteries on the Edge of Georgia and Davit Gareji and the Semi-Desert — Monastery, Steppe and Rainbow Hills both include the Lavra and the surrounding steppe scenery, with the guide confirming on the day whether the Udabno frescoes path is open. Independent travellers who prefer their own schedule but want the car and route sorted can also use Car with Driver by the Day or add a Licensed Private Guide by the Day to any of these routes.

Combining all three on one trip

Because Uplistsikhe, Vardzia and David Gareja sit roughly 300 kilometres apart in three directions, fitting all three into a single day is not realistic and not advisable given the heat and walking involved. A workable pattern over a longer trip is: Tbilisi to Uplistsikhe and Gori as a half or full day, a separate day or two toward Akhaltsikhe for Vardzia and the Rabati fortress, and David Gareja as its own day trip from Tbilisi in the opposite, eastern direction, ideally scheduled for the cooler morning hours. Travellers building a longer south-of-Georgia itinerary sometimes combine several of these with Borjomi’s forests and spa town in a single loop, which is the logic behind The South in 3 Days — Borjomi, Vardzia, Rabati and Abastumani.

Practical summary

• Vardzia: 12th-century fortress-monastery of George III and Queen Tamar, badly damaged by the 1283 earthquake, near Akhaltsikhe.
• Uplistsikhe: pre-Christian sun-worship town near Gori, inhabited from the early Iron Age into the Mongol period.
• David Gareja: 6th-century monastic complex still in active use, on the contested Georgia-Azerbaijan border; the Udabno fresco path can close without much notice, so check current access before you go.
• Carry water, wear a hat and closed shoes, and plan around early morning or late afternoon, especially June to August.
• Uplistsikhe is the easiest to do independently; Vardzia is easier with an overnight nearby; David Gareja needs a private car, a 4×4 outside summer, or a tour.
• None of the three is yet a full UNESCO World Heritage Site; verify current entrance fees and hours with the managing agency before your visit.
• For planning, see gtour.ge/road-status and gtour.ge/today for current road and border conditions before a Gareja trip.
