Tbilisi, Batumi, Kazbegi, Svaneti and Kakheti sit close together on the map but behave like five different countries in the weather charts. Tbilisi and Kakheti share a dry, continental climate with hot summers and crisp winters; Batumi and the rest of the Black Sea coast are humid subtropical, wet in every season and warmest for swimming from June to September; Kazbegi and Svaneti are mountain climates where snow can fall in any month above 2,000 metres and the high passes close for part of the year. There is no single “best month for Georgia” — it depends on which of these five places you are heading to.
As a rule of thumb: late May, June and September are the most forgiving months almost everywhere, combining warm days, manageable rain and (in the mountains) open roads. July and August bring the most reliable sea-swimming weather to Batumi but also the country’s heat and humidity peaks. December to March is ski and snow-landscape season in Kazbegi, Svaneti and Bakuriani, and the time when Ushguli and some military-highway sections are hardest to reach. Figures below are long-run averages, not forecasts; always check the official sources linked in each section before you travel, since any single year can run warmer, colder or wetter than normal.
Tbilisi by month
Tbilisi has a transitional climate — hot, fairly dry summers and short, mild-to-cold winters with occasional snow that rarely settles for long. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking the Old Town and day trips such as Tbilisi & Mtskheta — The Essential First Day.

For current readings and short-range forecasts, verify against the National Environment Agency of Georgia, which runs the country’s hydrometeorological network.
Batumi and the humid coast by month
Batumi is one of the wettest cities on the Black Sea, with rain possible in any month — autumn and early winter bring the heaviest totals. Humidity stays high year-round, which makes July and August feel hotter than the thermometer suggests. Our Batumi & the Ajara Mountains — 2 Days tour times most of its coastal walking for the cooler parts of the day for this reason.
| Month | Avg high / low °C | Rainy days | Sea temp °C |

| Jan | 10 / 4 | 18 | 11 |
| Feb | 11 / 4 | 15 | 10 |

Comfortable swimming generally runs from mid-June to late September, with the sea still mild enough for a quick dip into early October. Batumi’s humidity and rain pattern are consistent with its classification as a humid subtropical climate, a point often noted in coverage of the Black Sea coast by outlets such as BBC travel and weather reporting.

Kazbegi and the Georgian Military Highway by month
Stepantsminda (Kazbegi), at roughly 1,740 metres, is noticeably colder than Tbilisi in every month and holds snow from late autumn into spring. The Jvari Pass section of the Georgian Military Highway is the main choke point: it can close temporarily after heavy snowfall or avalanche risk between November and April, and occasionally after summer storms. Day trips such as Kazbegi — Gergeti Trinity Church in a Day and the longer Kazbegi — 2-Day Mountain Journey are easiest to run between May and October.
| Month | Avg high / low °C | Snow on ground | Pass status |

| Feb | -1 / -8 | Yes | Frequent short closures |
| Mar | 3 / -5 | Patchy, melting | Occasional closures |
| Apr | 9 / 0 | Mostly gone at road level | Usually open |
| May | 14 / 5 | Rare below pass | Open |
| Jun | 17 / 9 | None at village level | Open |

| Aug | 20 / 11 | None | Open |
| Sep | 16 / 7 | First dusting possible late month | Open |
| Oct | 10 / 2 | Possible | Mostly open, watch forecasts |
| Nov | 4 / -3 | Likely | Closures begin |
| Dec | -1 / -7 | Yes | Frequent short closures |
Always check live conditions before driving: the Georgian Road Department publishes road and pass status at georoad.gov.ge, and our own road status page tracks the same closures in plain English for travellers booking with us.
Svaneti by month
Mestia sits at about 1,500 metres and Ushguli higher still, so winter arrives early and leaves late. Heavy snow typically closes or badly degrades the unpaved sections toward Ushguli from November into April, and even in a mild year a 4×4 and local judgement are needed outside midsummer. Mestia & Ushguli — 3 Days in Svaneti is built around the June-to-September window when all villages are reliably reachable.
| Month | Avg high / low °C | Snow | Ushguli road |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | -2 / -10 | Deep | Often impassable without chains/4×4 |
| Feb | 0 / -9 | Deep | Often impassable without chains/4×4 |
| Mar | 5 / -4 | Melting, still heavy at altitude | Difficult |
| Apr | 11 / 1 | Patchy | Improving, still risky |
| May | 16 / 6 | Mostly gone at village level | Usually open |
| Jun | 19 / 10 | None at village level | Open |
| Jul | 22 / 12 | None | Open, best month |
| Aug | 22 / 12 | None | Open |
| Sep | 18 / 8 | First at altitude late month | Open |
| Oct | 12 / 3 | Possible | Usually open, check conditions |
| Nov | 5 / -2 | Likely | Closures begin |
| Dec | 0 / -7 | Heavy | Largely closed |
Svaneti’s Upper Svaneti towers and villages are a UNESCO World Heritage property, and the site’s own documentation notes the remote, high-altitude setting that drives this weather pattern; see the UNESCO listing for Upper Svaneti.

Kakheti by month
Kakheti is warmer and slightly drier than Tbilisi in summer, with the same cold-but-manageable winters. The region’s calendar is built around the grape harvest, or rtveli, which usually runs from mid-September into October — our Rtveli — Wine Harvest in Kakheti tour and Kakheti Grand Wine & Heritage — 3 Days are both timed to this window.
| Month | Avg high / low °C | Rainy days | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | 5 / -2 | 7 | Quiet, cellars open, some closures for the quietest guesthouses |
| Feb | 7 / -1 | 7 | Pruning season in the vineyards |
| Mar | 12 / 3 | 8 | Buds break mid-to-late month |
| Apr | 18 / 8 | 9 | Vineyards green up fast |
| May | 22 / 12 | 11 | Comfortable touring weather |
| Jun | 26 / 16 | 9 | Warm, occasional storms |
| Jul | 29 / 18 | 6 | Hot, dry |
| Aug | 29 / 18 | 6 | Grapes ripening, hottest month |
| Sep | 25 / 14 | 7 | Rtveli harvest begins |
| Oct | 18 / 9 | 7 | Harvest continues, best light for photos |
| Nov | 11 / 4 | 8 | New wine tastings begin |
| Dec | 6 / 0 | 7 | Cold, clear days common |
Heatwaves and when the humid coast feels hottest
Tbilisi and Kakheti can see heatwave spells in July and August when daytime highs push toward 38–40°C for several days in a row; these are the months to plan museum visits, wine-cellar tours and the David Gareji desert trip for early morning or late afternoon. The combination of heat and humidity on the Batumi coast — rather than the raw temperature — is what makes late July and August feel most taxing there, since humidity regularly sits above 70 percent. People with heart or respiratory conditions, older travellers and young children are most at risk during these spells; Georgia’s public health authority issues seasonal heat advisories that are worth checking if you are travelling in peak summer, via the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health of Georgia. For any personal health concern linked to heat or altitude, see a doctor before you travel rather than relying on general guidance.
Best month for each region
- Tbilisi — May or late September to mid-October, for mild days and manageable rain.
- Batumi and the coast — June and September for warm sea with fewer crowds than peak August; July–August for the warmest water but the most humidity.
- Kazbegi — June to September, when the Georgian Military Highway and Jvari Pass are reliably open; shoulder months need a flexible itinerary.
- Svaneti — July and August for Ushguli access and trekking; June and September are good but check road conditions first.
- Kakheti — September and October for the rtveli harvest, or May for quiet vineyards and green hillsides.
