Truso Valley is a high glacial valley in Kazbegi National Park, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, reached by dirt track from the village of Kobi on the Georgian Military Highway, about 15 kilometres west of Stepantsminda. It is known for orange and white travertine terraces built by carbonated mineral springs and for the ruined medieval towers of villages largely abandoned after the Russia-Georgia war of August 2008. Because the valley runs up to the administrative boundary line with South Ossetia, a border-zone permit is required to enter.
Truso is a broad, treeless valley cut by a tributary of the Tergi (Terek) river, flanked by grassy slopes and, higher up, bare rock and old moraine. The main draw is a string of mineral springs that have built up travertine terraces in shades of orange, red and white, with pools of carbonated water that fizz visibly at the surface. Scattered along the valley floor are the remains of villages — Ketrisi, Abano, Chkvieri and others — most of them emptied since 2008, with Georgian defensive towers dating from roughly the ninth to thirteenth centuries still standing over collapsed stone houses. Cattle and horses graze the upper pastures in summer, and the valley narrows toward its head into a gorge marked by a Georgian border police post near the boundary with South Ossetia.
Truso sat on a medieval route linking highland Georgia with Ossetian lands to the north, which is why its villages carry defensive towers rather than simple farmhouses. The valley fell within the Kazbegi protected area established in the Soviet period and later reorganised as part of Georgia’s national park system under the Agency of Protected Areas (apa.gov.ge). The decisive break in the valley’s recent history came in August 2008, when fighting in the Russia-Georgia war reached the area close to the administrative boundary line with South Ossetia; most residents of the upper villages left and never resettled permanently, and the valley has since been administered as a restricted border zone requiring prior clearance to enter (civil.ge).

From Stepantsminda, drive or be driven about 8 kilometres south on the Georgian Military Highway to Kobi, then turn off onto the Truso dirt track; a 4×4 is strongly recommended for the next 12 to 15 kilometres into the valley. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours one way from Stepantsminda. From Tbilisi, the drive to Kobi takes around 2.5 to 3 hours on the Military Highway, plus the time into the valley itself; there is no marshrutka or train service into Truso, so a private car, 4×4 or organised tour is necessary. With us, a Tbilisi–Kazbegi transfer by 4×4 or minivan is €180 (sedan €150), and a 4×4 day with driver around Tbilisi and the highlands is €220 per day; our Kazbegi — 2-Day Mountain Journey (from €332 per person, four to six travellers) and Kazbegi — Gergeti Trinity Church in a Day (from €136 per person) can be extended or combined with a Truso excursion, subject to permit and road conditions (https://gtour.ge/tour/kazbegi-2-days/, https://gtour.ge/tour/kazbegi-gergeti-trinity-church-in-a-day/).

A round trip from Stepantsminda to the travertine terraces and back takes 3 to 5 hours including driving and walking time; a full day allows for a longer walk toward the upper villages. The valley is realistically open from late May to early October, with July and August the warmest and most reliably passable months; spring brings mud and meltwater, and snow can close the track outside summer.

No, there is no ticket or gate, only the permit requirement and, outside summer, uncertain road conditions.
What is the best time to visit?
Late May to early October, with July and August offering the most reliable road access.
