Can you work remotely from Georgia, and for how long?

Yes. Most passport holders, including the US, UK, EU, Gulf states and many others, can enter Georgia visa-free and stay up to 365 days per calendar year, which in practice means a full year of working from a laptop in Tbilisi, Batumi or a mountain town without applying for any special permit. This rule has been stable for years and remains the simplest route for remote workers in 2026; always confirm your own nationality’s exact allowance before booking flights.

The nuance is that “visa-free” is not the same as “tax-free” or “work-permitted” in every sense. After 183 days physically present in Georgia within any 12-month period, you generally become a Georgian tax resident under the Tax Code, though Georgia’s territorial system still exempts most foreign-source income for individuals. The pandemic-era “Remotely from Georgia” programme that required a formal application is widely reported as no longer active; the standard visa-free stay has effectively replaced it for most nationalities, so check the current list before assuming you need to apply for anything.

The one-year visa-free rule

Georgia’s entry rules are set out by the eVisa portal and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which publish the country-by-country visa-free list and the maximum stay for each one. For many nationalities, including the US, UK, EU and EEA states, Canada, and several others, the allowance is 365 days per calendar year with no extension process required, simply leave and re-enter if you want to reset the clock, though border officers can ask for proof of funds or onward travel. Rules differ for some nationalities and can change, so verify your own passport’s entry before you travel.

What happened to “Remotely from Georgia”

Georgia launched a dedicated remote-worker visa scheme during the pandemic, asking applicants to show roughly 2,000 USD a month in income, health insurance, and a clean criminal record, in exchange for a residence permit allowing entry when borders were otherwise restricted. With borders fully open again, that scheme has largely lost its purpose and is not actively promoted by the government in 2026; some older press coverage still circulates online, which can mislead travellers into thinking an application is required. Before assuming any special programme applies to you, check the current guidance on evisa.gov.ge and gov.ge, since policy pages are the only reliable place to confirm whether a named scheme is still accepting applications.

Taxes after 183 days

Georgia’s Tax Code, published through matsne.gov.ge, defines a tax resident as anyone present in the country for 183 days or more in any continuous 12-month period ending in the relevant tax year. Becoming a tax resident does not automatically mean Georgia taxes your foreign salary: the system is territorial, so income earned from work performed for clients or employers outside Georgia is generally treated as foreign-source and is not taxed locally for individuals, while Georgia-source income is. Many freelancers instead register as an Individual Entrepreneur with small-business status through gov.ge, which can bring turnover up to a set annual threshold under a flat 1 percent rate, though eligibility, exclusions and the current threshold change periodically and should be confirmed with a local accountant or directly on the government portal rather than assumed from older articles. This is a tax question with real financial consequences, so anyone planning to stay past 183 days should get written advice from a Georgian tax professional, not rely on a travel article.

Internet and coworking in Tbilisi

Fixed and mobile internet in Tbilisi is widely described by residents and visiting press as fast and inexpensive by regional standards, and most hotels, guesthouses and cafés in the capital and in Batumi advertise working wifi as standard. Coworking spaces have multiplied in Tbilisi over the past several years, clustered mainly around Vake, Vera and the old town, offering day passes and monthly desks, though exact pricing and current openings move quickly enough that we do not quote fixed figures here; check listings close to your travel dates. Outside the two main cities, connectivity is generally reliable in larger towns such as Kutaisi, Telavi and Batumi, but mountain regions including Svaneti, Tusheti and parts of the Kazbegi area can have patchy mobile signal and slower fixed lines, which matters if your work depends on video calls; build in a buffer day if you are combining remote work with a trip to somewhere like Mestia & Ushguli or Tusheti.

Planning a working stay around travel

• Confirm your passport’s visa-free allowance on evisa.gov.ge before booking a one-year stay
• Track days in-country carefully if you want to stay under 183 days and avoid tax residency
• Keep weekend trips light near deadlines: a Tbilisi & Mtskheta day trip or Sighnaghi & Bodbe wine country day keeps you back online the same evening
• For a longer break from the laptop, multi-day routes such as Kakheti Grand Wine & Heritage or Georgia in 7 Days are easiest booked with a private car and driver so transfer times are predictable
• Check current private transfer and car-with-driver rates on the GTour data page before budgeting a trip around a remote-work base

Where this comes from

This answer draws on the visa-free entry rules published by Georgia’s eVisa portal and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the residency and taxation provisions of the Tax Code of Georgia on the Legislative Herald (matsne.gov.ge), and small-business registration guidance on gov.ge, checked on 27 October 2026. Programme names and thresholds for remote-work schemes and tax rates can change; always confirm the current wording on the official page linked above rather than relying on older news coverage, and consult a licensed Georgian accountant for any personal tax decision.
