Yes, Georgia works well for a family holiday in 2026, provided you build the trip around Tbilisi, Kakheti and the Black Sea coast rather than the high mountains. Short drives, a walkable old capital, flat vineyard country and sandy or pebble beaches on the Black Sea coast give children things to do without long car journeys, and licensed guides and private cars with child seats are easy to arrange through georgia.travel, the national tourism board’s family-oriented listings.
The nuance is altitude and road time. The Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi, the unpaved stretches to Ushguli in Svaneti and the Abano Pass into Tusheti are the parts of the country that genuinely strain small children: winding roads, long drives, and villages sitting at 1,700 to 2,900 metres. These routes are not off-limits, but they suit school-age children better than babies and toddlers, and winter closures on the high passes are common, so always check current conditions before booking, via georoad.gov.ge.
What works well with children
Tbilisi’s old town is compact and mostly flat near the river, with the Narikala cable car and the older Mtatsminda funicular giving children a ride rather than a climb, plus sulfur bathhouses and Mtatsminda Park‘s rides at the top. A half-day with a guide, such as Tbilisi & Mtskheta — The Essential First Day, covers the capital and nearby Mtskheta’s churches without exhausting small legs.
Kakheti is Georgia’s easiest region for families: short, flat drives between Telavi, Sighnaghi and the wine villages, with vineyard picnics and gentle walks. Day trips such as Sighnaghi & Bodbe or Telavi & Kakheti Wine Region keep total driving under two hours each way. The Black Sea coast around Batumi and Kobuleti adds beaches, the Batumi boulevard, a dolphinarium and the Batumi cableway up Mount Anuria, useful on a Batumi & the Ajara Mountains two-day trip.
What is harder with young children
- Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi: around 2.5 hours each way, winding, with the Gergeti Trinity Church viewpoint near 2,170 metres.
- Roads to Mestia and Ushguli in Svaneti: long drives (or a short flight plus drive), unpaved sections near Ushguli, altitude around 2,200 metres.
- Tusheti via the Abano Pass: a full day’s drive on dirt track above 2,900 metres, no phone signal, not recommended with children under ten.
- Winter mountain closures: Gudauri, Kazbegi and Svaneti roads can close for snow or avalanche control with little notice; check georoad.gov.ge before travelling.

Child seats and our family policy
Our airport transfers (Tbilisi sedan €25, minivan €35, see the full table at gtour.ge/data) include child seats, flight tracking and 60 minutes of free waiting at no extra charge. For multi-day touring with a car and driver, ask us in advance to fit the right seat for your child’s age and weight; our family policy sets out how we handle seating, feeding stops and realistic daily driving limits for trips with young children, and it applies to tours such as Georgia in 7 Days — The Classic Grand Tour and the shorter Kazbegi — Gergeti Trinity Church in a Day, which we can slow down or shorten on request.
Hospitals and health
Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi have modern private hospitals and English-speaking staff at the larger clinics; pharmacies are widely available in all three cities. Outside these centres, in Svaneti, Tusheti and Racha, facilities are basic and the nearest proper hospital can be hours away by road, which matters if you are travelling with a baby or a child with a known medical condition. Georgia’s public health authority publishes general travel health information at ncgh.ge, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs keeps travel advisories at mfa.gov.ge. Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is sensible for any mountain itinerary, and you should discuss altitude and any pre-existing conditions with your own doctor before booking Kazbegi, Svaneti or Tusheti with small children.
Where this comes from
This answer draws on the Georgian Road Department’s road condition pages, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel advisory pages, Georgia’s public health authority, the Georgian National Tourism Administration’s family travel pages, and GTour’s own price and policy pages, checked on 26 October 2026. Road closures, hospital services and prices can change; always verify mountain road status and official health advice before travelling with children, and see our current tour and service prices at gtour.ge/data.
If this guide is part of a trip you are planning, our Monasteries of Georgia — Mtskheta, the Thirteen Fathers and Kakheti in 3 Days and Rtveli — Wine Harvest in Kakheti (3 Days, September–October) cover the places it describes with a private guide and driver; a GTour travel expert adapts the route to your dates.
