Is tap water safe to drink in Georgia?

Tap water in Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi and other main Georgian cities is safe to drink straight from the tap in 2026. It comes mostly from mountain springs and reservoirs, is chlorinated and tested under national drinking-water standards, and no change to this rule is scheduled this year.

The nuance is geography and plumbing, not the national supply itself. Mountain villages, small guesthouses fed by untreated springs, and buildings with very old internal pipework can carry risks that a city mains connection does not, so travellers heading into rural Georgia or the high Caucasus should default to bottled or properly filtered water, and anyone with a sensitive stomach, young children, or a compromised immune system should check with a doctor before relying on local tap water anywhere outside the main cities.

Tbilisi and the main cities

Tbilisi’s municipal supply draws on the Aragvi and other mountain sources feeding the city’s reservoirs, then runs through treatment and chlorination before reaching household taps; the city government publishes information on the network through tbilisi.gov.ge. Batumi, Kutaisi, Rustavi and Telavi run comparable municipal systems. Georgia’s drinking-water quality falls under technical regulations enforced by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, see mepa.gov.ge, with the underlying legal act published through matsne.gov.ge. In practice, most residents and long-term expatriates drink Tbilisi tap water without issue; a mild taste of chlorine near the mains is common and not a safety concern.

Villages and mountain areas

Outside the cities the picture is mixed. Many Kakhetian, Svaneti, Tusheti and Racha villages run on gravity-fed spring water that is not chemically treated; locals drink it routinely and it is often genuinely clean at the source, but pipe age, livestock near catchments, and spring run-off after heavy rain or snowmelt can introduce risk that a visitor’s gut is not adapted to. On multi-day trips such as Mestia Ushguli, Tusheti, or Kazbegi, we advise guests to drink bottled or boiled water and to avoid untreated stream water even where it looks pristine. Guesthouse hosts will usually tell you plainly whether their water is from a tested municipal line or a private spring; ask, rather than assume.

Bottled and mineral waters

Georgia is a major bottled and mineral water producer, and both still and naturally carbonated options are sold everywhere, including on long highway drives and in mountain villages with no reliable tap alternative.

Prices for bottled water are small and change with inflation; for current approximate costs we keep a running note on gtour.ge/data alongside the Lari exchange rate.

Preventing travellers’ diarrhoea

• In Tbilisi and other large cities, tap water for drinking, teeth-brushing, and ice is generally fine; if unsure, ask your hotel.
• In villages and mountain guesthouses, default to bottled or boiled water, including for brushing teeth.
• Avoid untreated stream, spring or glacial meltwater on hikes unless boiled or filtered, however clear it looks.
• Wash hands before eating and be cautious with raw salads washed in untreated water in remote areas.
• Carry oral rehydration salts on multi-day treks in Tusheti, Svaneti or Khevsureti, where the nearest pharmacy may be hours away.
• If diarrhoea persists beyond 48 hours, includes fever or blood, or affects a young child, seek medical care rather than self-treating; Tbilisi has several clinics used to treating travellers.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion for your specific health situation; people with chronic gastrointestinal conditions or weakened immunity should discuss travel to Georgia with a doctor beforehand.

Where this comes from

This answer draws on Georgia’s drinking-water technical regulation published via matsne.gov.ge, oversight information from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture at mepa.gov.ge, Tbilisi City Hall’s public information on municipal water supply at tbilisi.gov.ge, national tourism guidance at georgia.travel, and World Bank infrastructure reporting on Georgia’s water systems at worldbank.org. Checked 27 October 2026. Rules and infrastructure investment can change; always confirm current status for a specific town or village with your host or guide, and check gtour.ge/data for any pricing figures mentioned here.
