Borjomi is a spa town in a wooded gorge of the Kura river, famous across the former Soviet world for its naturally carbonated mineral water, which still flows from a spring in the town's central park. The Romanov family built a summer palace here in the nineteenth century, and the town keeps a faded, elegant resort air of villas, promenades and a narrow-gauge railway.
The park leads to open-air hot springs a short walk upstream; the Borjomi-Kharagauli national park, one of the largest in the Caucasus, opens from the town's edge with marked trails of one to several days. Bakuriani, the ski and summer resort, is half an hour up the mountain, and the cave city of Vardzia and the Rabati fortress at Akhaltsikhe are within a day.
Borjomi is two and a half hours from Tbilisi and pleasant in every season — green and cool in summer, golden in autumn, snowy and quiet in winter.
