Sighnaghi is a small walled town on a ridge above the Alazani valley, restored in the last two decades into the prettiest place in Kakheti — cobbled lanes, carved wooden balconies, and an eighteenth-century city wall with towers you can walk along, looking across the vineyards to the Caucasus.
Two kilometres away, the Bodbe convent holds the tomb of St Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia; its gardens and spring are a place of pilgrimage. The town's museum keeps paintings by Pirosmani, the self-taught artist born nearby. Wine is everywhere: cellar tastings in town, family estates in the valley below, and the qvevri traditions of Kakheti within easy reach.
