Overview

Manglisi is a small mountain resort in Tetritskaro municipality, in the Kvemo Kartli region of southern Georgia, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes by car from Tbilisi. Set at an elevation of around 1,200–1,250 metres on a plateau covered with pine and beech forest, it has been used for well over a century as a place where residents of the hot Tbilisi plain come to breathe cooler air, walk under old pines and visit one of the oldest cathedrals in Georgia. It is not a ski resort and has none of the infrastructure of Bakuriani or Gudauri; its appeal is quieter, built on forest, altitude and a single, historically important church.

Manglisi matters to travellers for two reasons. First, its cathedral, Manglisi Sioni, is among the earliest Christian foundations in eastern Georgia and a reference point for the history of Georgian church architecture. Second, the town preserves the pattern of the 19th- and early 20th-century Caucasian hill resort — pine parks, sanatorium buildings, and a cool microclimate reached easily from the capital — which makes it a useful case study of how Tbilisi’s elite, and later Soviet health planners, used the mountains of Kvemo Kartli for rest and treatment. GTour includes Manglisi in private itineraries on request, usually combined with the fortress at Kldekari or the monastery of Betania on the same road.

History

Christianity reached this part of Kartli in the centuries following the conversion of the Georgian royal court, traditionally dated to the reign of King Mirian III in the 4th century., a church is recorded at Manglisi from an early period, making it one of the historic episcopal sees of eastern Georgia; the cathedral held relics associated with the Georgian church and was an important seat through the medieval period.

The fortress of Kldekari, a short distance from Manglisi, is documented as the medieval seat of the Baghvashi noble family, who controlled this part of Kartli and were repeatedly drawn into conflict with the Georgian crown in the 11th and 12th centuries. The presence of a major cathedral at Manglisi alongside a fortified ducal seat nearby indicates that this plateau was a genuine centre of secular and religious power in medieval Kartli, not an isolated village.

In the 19th century, after the incorporation of eastern Georgia into the Russian Empire, the cool highland climate of Manglisi began to attract visitors from Tbilisi seeking relief from the summer heat of the Mtkvari valley, a pattern repeated at other Georgian hill stations such as Borjomi and Bakuriani. Pine plantations and parkland associated with this period still shape the appearance of the town. During the Soviet period Manglisi, like many forested highland settlements in Georgia, was developed with sanatorium and rest-house facilities built around the belief that pine-forest air benefited patients with respiratory conditions; several of these buildings survive, in varying states of repair, on the edge of the modern town.

What to see

Manglisi Sioni Cathedral

The cathedral is the principal reason to visit Manglisi, a domed church with a long history as an episcopal centre of eastern Georgia. Its present structure combines older masonry with later reconstruction phases, and it remains in use as an active church. The cool, forested churchyard and the simplicity of the building’s exterior are typical of early Georgian ecclesiastical architecture rather than later, more ornamented styles.

Manglisi pine forest and park

The plateau around the town is covered with stands of pine, many planted or protected during the resort’s 19th- and 20th-century development, and crossed by easy walking paths. This forest is the reason Manglisi functioned as a health resort, and it remains the most pleasant reason to linger for an afternoon, especially in summer when the air is noticeably cooler than in Tbilisi.

Kldekari Fortress

A ruined medieval fortress associated with the Baghvashi feudal family lies near Manglisi, reachable as a short excursion from the town. The remains sit on defensible high ground typical of Georgian feudal strongholds of the 11th and 12th centuries and offer views over the surrounding hills of Kvemo Kartli.

Betania Monastery (nearby detour)

Betania, a medieval monastery with notable frescoes, lies in the same general area between Tbilisi and Manglisi and is often combined with a visit to the resort. It is one of the better-preserved examples of Georgian ecclesiastical painting from the medieval period and is included in many guided day routes through Tetritskaro municipality.

Getting there

From Tbilisi, Manglisi is reached by road via Kojori and Tetritskaro, a drive of about 1 hour 20 minutes under normal conditions; the route climbs steadily into forested hills and can be slower in winter weather. Marshrutka minibuses to Manglisi run from Tbilisi’s Didube station, with journey times close to those by private car depending on stops. There is no passenger rail service to Manglisi, so road transport is the only practical option. From Kutaisi the drive is approximately 4 hours 25 minutes and from Batumi approximately 6 hours 35 minutes, both routes passing through Tbilisi or around it on the main east-west highway; for these longer approaches most visitors treat Manglisi as a side trip arranged from the capital rather than a direct destination. Road conditions on mountain sections can be checked in advance through the road status page, and GTour arranges private transfers and guided tours with an English-speaking driver-guide for travellers who prefer not to self-drive.

When to go

Manglisi is at its best from late May to September, when the altitude keeps temperatures noticeably lower than in Tbilisi and the pine forest is at its most pleasant for walking. Early autumn also suits a visit, with clearer light for the cathedral and fewer visitors than midsummer weekends. Winters bring snow and cold, and while the town is not set up as a ski destination, the cathedral and forest can still be visited on a clear day; road conditions should be checked beforehand in winter months.

Where to stay and eat

Manglisi has limited formal accommodation compared with larger resorts, and most visitors either come as a day trip from Tbilisi or combine the town with an overnight stay elsewhere in Kvemo Kartli. For food in the area, Mdelo is a verified gastronomy option near Manglisi, offering a place to eat while exploring the forest and cathedral. GTour’s verified register lists more hotels, guesthouses and restaurants across the region, along with practical guides and best-of selections for travellers planning a longer route through Kvemo Kartli.

Practical notes

Manglisi’s elevation makes evenings noticeably cooler than Tbilisi even in high summer, so a light jacket is worth packing between May and September and warmer layers outside that window. Facilities such as ATMs, pharmacies and fuel stations are limited in the town itself, so it is sensible to carry cash and fill a vehicle’s tank before leaving Tbilisi or Tetritskaro. The cathedral is an active place of worship, and visitors should dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, as at other working Georgian churches. Mobile signal is generally adequate in the town centre but can weaken in the surrounding forest and near Kldekari fortress.

Questions travellers ask
