Overview

Keda is a small town and the administrative centre of Keda Municipality in Ajara, in Georgia’s southwest. It sits in the valley of the Adjaristsqali River, on the road that climbs from the Black Sea coast at Batumi toward Khulo and the Goderdzi Pass, roughly 55 minutes by car from Batumi, about 3 hours 35 minutes from Kutaisi and close to 7 hours from Tbilisi. The municipality has around 1,510 residents in the town itself, with the wider rural area known for hazelnut orchards, timber-built Ajarian farmhouses and steep, forested ridges that rise toward the Lesser Caucasus.

Keda matters to travellers less as a single sight and more as a gateway: it is the natural stop between lowland Ajara and the high mountain villages of Khulo, Beshumi and Goderdzi, and it holds one of the region’s most distinctive medieval churches, a well-preserved stone arched bridge and waterfall, and a landscape of old wooden bridges and vernacular architecture that is harder to find closer to the coast. For visitors building an itinerary beyond Batumi, Keda is a logical half-day or overnight addition, and GTour includes it in private tours of inland Ajara on request.

History

Like the rest of Ajara, the Keda area was part of the medieval Georgian kingdom before falling under Ottoman control from the 16th century, a period that left a lasting imprint on local architecture, cuisine and, for several centuries, religion, as much of the rural population converted to Islam under Ottoman administration. The medieval Skhalta Church, built in the Skhalta gorge near Keda, is usually dated to the 13th century and predates this Ottoman period, standing as evidence of Georgian ecclesiastical building in the mountains before Ottoman rule was established over the area.

Ottoman control of the region ended after the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878; under the Treaty of Berlin Ajara, including the Keda district, was transferred to the Russian Empire. Following the upheavals of the First World War and the short-lived independent Democratic Republic of Georgia, the region’s status was settled by the 1921 Treaty of Kars, after which Soviet Georgia established the Adjara Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, a status that, adapted to the post-Soviet constitution, continues today as the Adjara Autonomous Republic. Keda developed through the Soviet period as a district centre serving the surrounding mountain villages, a role it still performs, with the municipality’s population concentrated along the river valley and the road to Khulo.

What to see

Skhalta Church (Skhalta Monastery)

Set in a narrow side gorge a short drive from Keda, this domed stone church is generally dated to the 13th century and is one of the better-preserved medieval monuments in mountainous Ajara. Its survival through the long Ottoman period, when much of the surrounding population adopted Islam, makes it an important reference point for the region’s earlier Georgian Christian history. The building and its setting beside the Skhaltistsqali River are worth the short detour from the main valley road.

Makhuntseti Waterfall and arched bridge

In the village of Makhuntseti, within Keda municipality, a roughly 20-metre waterfall drops beside a 19th-century single-span stone arched bridge of the traditional Ajarian type, built without mortar. The combination of waterfall, bridge and surrounding hazelnut groves makes this one of the most photographed stops on the road between Batumi and Khulo. A short path leads from the road down to the base of the falls.

Old Ajarian stone and wooden bridges

Beyond Makhuntseti, the Adjaristsqali valley and its side gorges preserve several more arched stone bridges and timber footbridges built in the same local tradition, some still in everyday use by villagers crossing to orchards and pastures. They are unsigned and best found with a local guide or driver who knows the side roads.

The road toward Khulo and Goderdzi Pass

Keda is the last substantial town before the road narrows and climbs through forested switchbacks toward Khulo and, beyond it, the Goderdzi Pass. The drive itself, with views over terraced hillsides and scattered wooden houses, is part of the appeal of visiting inland Ajara rather than staying on the coast.

Getting there

From Batumi, Keda is about 55 minutes by car along a paved road that follows the Adjaristsqali River; the same route is served by regular marshrutkas (shared minibuses) from Batumi’s bus station, with a similar journey time. From Kutaisi, the drive takes around 3 hours 35 minutes, typically via Khulo-bound roads or back through Batumi depending on season and road conditions. From Tbilisi the drive is close to 7 hours, and most visitors from the capital either fly or take the train to Batumi or Kutaisi first and continue by road from there; Georgian Railway operates services between Tbilisi and both cities. There is no rail line into Keda itself. Before travelling in the shoulder or winter seasons, check current conditions via the road status page, since the higher sections toward Khulo and Goderdzi can be affected by snow and landslides. GTour arranges private transfers and guided day trips from Batumi, Kutaisi or Tbilisi with an English-speaking driver.

When to go

Late spring through autumn, roughly May to October, offers the most reliable road conditions and the clearest mountain views, with hazelnut harvest season in late summer adding activity to the valley. Summer is also when the Makhuntseti waterfall carries the most visible flow after snowmelt and rain. Winter travel is possible as far as Keda itself, but the onward road toward Khulo and Goderdzi Pass can be closed or difficult after snowfall, so travellers heading further into the mountains should check conditions in advance.

Where to stay and eat

Options in and around Keda are limited compared with Batumi, which makes it worth booking ahead. Chateau Iveri is a verified hotel in the area suitable for an overnight stay while exploring inland Ajara, and Makhos Marani is a verified winery nearby offering tastings of local wine alongside traditional Ajarian dishes. GTour’s verified register lists more hotels, wineries and restaurants in the wider region; see the best of selections and the regional guides for additional options along the Batumi–Khulo road.

Practical notes

Mobile network coverage is generally reliable in Keda town but can weaken in the side gorges and higher up toward Goderdzi Pass. Cash is useful outside the main hotels and wineries, as card acceptance is inconsistent in smaller villages. Georgian is the main language, with Adjarian dialect features and, among older residents in some villages, a working knowledge of Turkish reflecting the area’s Ottoman-era history; English is spoken at tourism-oriented businesses but not universally elsewhere.
