Safari Tipping Explained: What Travellers From the Caucasus and Europe Should Budget

By Safari News — Africa Calling Safaris, Partner desk, Nairobi · 07/11/2026

Visitors heading to East Africa after a Caucasus itinerary often find tipping on safari harder to navigate than anywhere else on their trip. There is no printed scale, the sums involved are meaningful locally, and getting them wrong — in amount, timing or recipient — can create discomfort for both sides. Unlike some European habits where gratuities are discretionary, tipping in Kenya and Tanzania is an expected part of income for guides and camp teams, and it should always be handled in cash.

The guide-driver, who shapes the entire wildlife experience, is the key relationship: USD 15–20 per person per day is standard for excellent private service, USD 10–15 for a solid guide, and USD 8–10 as a floor for a shared vehicle with adequate guiding. This is usually handed over per vehicle on the final day, in cash, with a handshake. According to operational data gathered by Africa Calling Safaris between 2022 and 2024, tips make up 35–55% of take-home pay for full-time guide-drivers in Kenya’s parks. Camp staff gratuities, by contrast, go through a communal box at reception or in the dining tent, at USD 5–10 per person per night, covering kitchen, housekeeping and maintenance teams guests rarely meet directly.

Specialist providers have their own conventions: walking guides earn USD 10–15 per group per outing, night-drive guides USD 5–10 per person, boatmen USD 5–10 per person per hour, and airport transfer drivers USD 5–10 per journey. Africa Calling Safaris managing director Nikos Pocock suggests carrying around USD 200 in small notes for a two-week Kenya itinerary to cover guides, camps and incidental services such as a highland porter.

Travellers departing from Tbilisi or elsewhere in Europe should source clean USD notes — ideally dated after 2009 and in $1, $5, $10 and $20 denominations — before departure, since damaged bills are frequently refused locally. Tipping always comes at the end of a drive or stay, never upfront, and Kenyan Shillings, at roughly KES 130 to the dollar, are also accepted by camp staff.
