Cheetah and leopard rank among the most coveted safari sightings in East Africa, yet first-time visitors frequently mix them up. Both are spotted felines sharing the savannah, but their build, markings and habits set them firmly apart. The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) weighs 35–65 kg, with a slight frame built for pace, solid black spots and a black tear stripe running from eye to mouth to cut glare. The leopard (Panthera pardus), heavier at 30–90 kg, carries rosette-patterned fur, a muscular neck and shoulders, and no tear stripe; occasional melanistic individuals, known as black panthers, turn up in Kenya’s highland forests.
Behaviour differs just as sharply. Cheetahs hunt by day, closing to within 50 metres before sprinting at 110–120 km/h for 20–30 seconds, then resting before feeding to cool down. Leopards hunt mainly at night by stealth, hauling prey as heavy as a 60–65 kg impala into trees, eating at once, and defending kills alone within strict territories.
The Masai Mara–Serengeti ecosystem remains the best ground for both. Cheetah sightings peak from July to October, when short grass aids visibility, with an average 2.3 days to first sighting; leopards, spread more evenly year-round, peak in the dry season, averaging 3.8 days. Amboseli hosts resident cheetah coalitions of related males, while Laikipia and the Nakuru forests favour leopards. Travellers from Europe or the Caucasus typically reach Nairobi via one-stop connections before transferring to these parks.
