Georgia marks 16 public holidays in 2026 and the same 16 in 2027, fixed under the Law of Georgia on Public Holidays as consolidated on the Legislative Herald (matsne.gov.ge). The headline dates to remember are Orthodox Easter Sunday on 12 April 2026 and on 2 May 2027, each sitting inside a four-day block (Good Friday through Easter Monday) when churches, courts, banks and most offices close.
The nuance is that Georgia’s calendar mixes fixed civil dates (New Year, Independence Day, St George’s Day) with a movable Orthodox Easter cycle that follows the Julian Paschalion rather than the Western calendar, so the four Easter days shift by weeks between years. Unlike some neighbouring countries, Georgia does not automatically move a holiday that falls on a Saturday or Sunday to the following Monday, so always check the current year’s confirmed schedule on Matsne or the Patriarchate calendar (patriarchate.ge) before booking transport or expecting an office to be open.

Orthodox Easter is calculated each year by the Georgian Patriarchate; treat the 2027 date above as our best working figure and confirm it against the Patriarchate’s own calendar closer to the time, since Paschalion dates are sometimes only published a season or two ahead.

What actually closes
- Banks, courts, notaries and all government offices: closed on every date above, including the full Easter block.
- Schools and universities: closed; term dates around Easter and New Year usually extend into a longer break, set separately by the Ministry of Education.
- Museums: the Georgian National Museum network (museum.ge) generally closes on 1–2 January, 7 January and Easter Sunday; smaller regional museums often follow the same pattern but can vary, so check opening hours the week before a visit.
- Churches and monasteries: open as usual, and busier than normal on Christmas, Epiphany and the Easter block, when services run through the night.
- Shops, markets and restaurants: most stay open, though smaller family-run places in villages may close on 1 January, Christmas and Easter Sunday for their own family meal.
- Public transport: runs, but on a reduced, Sunday-style timetable on 1 January, 7 January and Easter Sunday; Tbilisi city services (tbilisi.gov.ge) post the holiday schedule a few days ahead.
Festivals that line up with the calendar
Several of the country’s best-known festivals cluster around these dates rather than falling on public holidays themselves. New Wine Festival in Tbilisi runs in spring, close to the Independence Day weekend; Rtveli, the grape harvest, spreads across Kakheti through September and October, overlapping with Svetitskhovloba; and Tbilisoba, the city’s autumn festival, is timed around the same October week. Our Rtveli — Wine Harvest in Kakheti (3 Days, September–October) tour is built around this window, and current rates are listed at https://gtour.ge/data/. The fuller festival calendar, including exact dates once confirmed by organisers, sits on our events page.

Where this comes from
Holiday dates and the underlying law were checked on matsne.gov.ge on 27 October 2026; Orthodox Easter dates were cross-checked against the Georgian Patriarchate’s published Paschalion practice at patriarchate.ge; museum and city-transport closure patterns were checked against museum.ge and tbilisi.gov.ge. Because the law can be amended and Easter dates for 2027 may still be confirmed closer to the date, readers planning travel around any of these days should verify the current official list on Matsne before finalising plans, and see our own price and calendar figures at https://gtour.ge/data/.
