Hong Kong SAR passport holders do not currently need a visa to enter Georgia for ordinary tourism, and Georgia has for several years been one of the more generous countries in the region on this point, with a standard permitted stay that has at times run as long as 360 days. Entry rules do change without much notice, so before you buy tickets confirm the current position on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs consular pages at mfa.gov.ge and, if anything looks uncertain, check whether an e-visa is now required through the official portal at evisa.gov.ge, which processes most applications within a few working days.
In practical terms, Hong Kong is a long way from Tbilisi: there is no direct flight, so you will connect through Istanbul, Doha, Dubai or, less often, Munich. Georgia runs on the lari (GEL), cards are standard in Tbilisi and Batumi but cash still matters in villages and mountain guesthouses, and English narrows quickly once you leave the main tourist routes. Mandatory travel insurance, a driving licence question that trips up many visitors, and a food culture built on bread, cheese, walnuts and wine rather than rice and soy sauce are the other things worth sorting out before you land. None of this is complicated once you know it, and a private guide closes the remaining gaps fast.
Visa and entry rules for Hong Kong passport holders
Georgia’s visa-free list and the length of stay it grants are set by government decision and reviewed periodically, so treat any figure you read, including the ones here, as something to double-check close to your travel date. The authoritative source is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs consular section at mfa.gov.ge, which lists nationalities and current stay allowances. If you fall outside the visa-free category, or if the rules have tightened by the time you travel, the e-visa system at evisa.gov.ge is the only official channel: it asks for a scanned passport, a passport photo and proof of accommodation, and historically has returned decisions within a few business days, occasionally longer around holidays. Do not rely on third-party visa agencies advertising faster service for Georgia; the official portal is free to use directly.
Keep your passport valid for the length of your trip and carry a printed or saved copy of your return or onward ticket, since border officers can ask for it even when no visa is required.
Getting there: flights, airports and connections
There is no nonstop service between Hong Kong and any Georgian city, so every itinerary runs through a hub. The three realistic options are:
| Hub | Typical carriers on this leg | Arrives into |
|---|---|---|
| Istanbul | Turkish Airlines, Cathay Pacific plus a Turkish Airlines connection | Tbilisi, Batumi or Kutaisi |
| Doha | Qatar Airways through-service | Tbilisi |
| Dubai | Emirates or Cathay Pacific plus flydubai | Tbilisi |
| Munich | Lufthansa, with a connection onward | Tbilisi |
Total travel time, including a reasonable layover, generally runs 16 to 22 hours depending on the connection. Istanbul tends to offer the most frequent onward options and the shortest total journey; Doha and Dubai are strong alternatives with good daytime arrivals into Tbilisi. Kutaisi International handles a growing number of low-cost European links and is worth checking if your routing passes through a budget carrier’s network; see current arrivals at kutaisiairport.com. Tbilisi International’s live schedule is at tbilisiairport.com, and Batumi’s at batumiairport.com. If you land in Kutaisi and want to start in the capital, our fixed-price Kutaisi airport to Tbilisi transfer avoids haggling with taxi touts.
Driving licence, money, cards and SIM
Georgian traffic law generally allows foreign visitors to drive on a valid national licence for the period of their legal stay, but Hong Kong driving licences are not printed in Georgian or Latin script in a form every rental counter will recognise, so most agencies ask for an International Driving Permit alongside it. Arrange the IDP in Hong Kong before you fly, since it cannot be issued locally. The underlying traffic code is published through the official legislative gazette at matsne.gov.ge; rules on foreign licences have been amended before and can be again, so confirm with your rental company directly.
The currency is the lari (GEL). At the National Bank of Georgia’s reference rate for 26 October 2026, one euro bought roughly 2.91 lari and one US dollar roughly 2.60 lari; Hong Kong dollars are not readily exchangeable on Georgian streets, so carry a card or bring US dollars or euros to convert on arrival. Cards are accepted in Tbilisi and Batumi hotels, restaurants and most shops; smaller guesthouses, mountain villages and market stalls often want cash. ATMs are widespread in cities and thin out in places like Svaneti and Tusheti, so withdraw before heading into the mountains. Current reference rates and a running price table in euros for tours and transfers are kept at gtour.ge/data.
Local SIM cards (Magti, Geocell, Silknet) are cheap and sold at airport kiosks with a passport; eSIM options from international providers also work well if your phone supports them and save you a shop visit on arrival.
Language: what to expect
Georgian is the national language and uses its own script, unrelated to Chinese. English is spoken reliably in Tbilisi hotels, central restaurants and most tour operations, and increasingly in Batumi and Kutaisi. Once you move into villages, mountain guesthouses or rural wine cellars, English thins out quickly and Russian is more likely to be understood among older residents than English is. Cantonese or Mandarin is not spoken outside a handful of Chinese-run restaurants in Tbilisi. Menus in tourist areas usually carry English; elsewhere, a translation app and a guide who can bridge the gap make a material difference, which is one of the plainer reasons travellers from Hong Kong book a private guide rather than self-drive the back roads.
Consular help, insurance and health
Georgia does not maintain a consulate in Hong Kong, and we are not certain which specific mission currently holds consular responsibility for Hong Kong SAR residents; confirm the correct office, likely Georgia’s embassy in Beijing or a regional posting, on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs site at mfa.gov.ge before you travel, and register your trip with your own Hong Kong travel document authority’s usual channel.
Georgia has, at various points, required inbound travellers to hold valid travel medical insurance for their stay, checked either at the e-visa application stage or occasionally at the border; this requirement has moved on and off in past years, so verify the current position directly through evisa.gov.ge and buy a policy that covers mountain activities if you plan to ski at Gudauri or trek in Svaneti or Tusheti, since standard travel policies sometimes exclude altitude or off-piste terrain. For general health advisories before departure, Georgia’s National Center for Disease Control and Public Health publishes guidance at ncgh.ge. For anything specific to your own health, including altitude, vaccinations or pre-existing conditions, see a doctor before you go rather than relying on a travel article.
Food and dietary notes
Georgian food is built around bread, cheese, walnuts, fresh herbs and grilled or stewed meat, with wine made and drunk everywhere; rice is uncommon and soy-based condiments are not part of the tradition, so do not expect anything resembling Cantonese cooking. Dishes most Hong Kong visitors take to quickly include khinkali (dumplings, closer in concept than taste to jiaozi), khachapuri (cheese-filled bread), grilled meat skewers (mtsvadi) and the walnut-and-vegetable pastes called pkhali, which are naturally vegetarian. Vegetarian eating is easy in Georgia thanks to the Orthodox fasting calendar, which produces an entire meat- and dairy-free repertoire available in most restaurants; ask for “mარხვანი” dishes or simply “vegetarian” and staff will understand. Halal options are limited outside Adjara, where Batumi’s Muslim community supports several halal butchers and restaurants; in Tbilisi, halal choices cluster around the historic mosque district and a small number of Turkish and Central Asian restaurants, and it is worth confirming with the kitchen directly rather than assuming. A handful of Chinese restaurants operate in Tbilisi, largely serving the small Chinese business community, and can be a useful reset after several days of heavier Georgian meals.
Ties between Georgia and Hong Kong, and when travellers come
The direct historical and cultural links between Georgia and Hong Kong are thin, and it is honest to say so rather than invent a connection that is not there. What exists is mostly recent and commercial: Georgia’s free trade arrangement with China has opened channels that Hong Kong firms sometimes use as a re-export point, Georgian wine exporters have been building interest in the Hong Kong and mainland Chinese markets as premium buyers diversify beyond French and Italian labels, and a small resident Chinese business community in Tbilisi anchors the handful of Chinese restaurants and trading offices in the city. Tourist arrivals from Hong Kong remain a small fraction of Georgia’s total visitor numbers, which are tracked nationally by Geostat at geostat.ge; most Hong Kong visitors currently come independently or through specialist operators rather than mass package tours.
In terms of timing, Hong Kong travellers tend to use the Lunar New Year break, the Easter school holidays and the summer window to visit, alongside a smaller but growing group who come specifically for skiing at Gudauri and Bakuriani during the Christmas and Lunar New Year period, when snow is reliable and European crowds are lighter than in the Alps. Our Georgia in Winter — Gudauri Skiing, Tbilisi and Kakheti tour and Kazbegi — 2-Day Mountain Journey both suit that slot well. Spring and early autumn, outside the peak European summer, give the best balance of mild weather and thinner crowds for first-time visitors.
Safety, etiquette and what a G Tour guide adds
Georgia has a low rate of violent crime against travellers and the main practical risks are road-related: mountain passes are narrow, winter driving requires real experience, and self-drive trips to Svaneti, Tusheti or the Kazbegi region are harder than they look online. At the table, Georgian hospitality centres on the supra, a long meal with structured toasts led by a toastmaster; accepting a small taste of wine even if you do not usually drink much is generally appreciated, and declining outright is not an offence, just slightly unusual to your hosts. Dress modestly when entering working Orthodox churches and monasteries, covering shoulders and, for women, the head with a scarf, which most sites provide at the door. Photographing military checkpoints, border zones or official buildings is best avoided. Tipping around 10 percent in restaurants is customary rather than compulsory.
What a G Tour guide adds for a Hong Kong traveller specifically is less about translation of Georgian (English covers most needs in the cities) and more about compressing a genuinely large country into a trip that fits your available days: knowing which mountain roads are safe to attempt in which season, which wineries will happily explain their process in English, where halal or vegetarian needs can be met without a long search, and how to sequence Tbilisi, Kakheti, Svaneti and the Black Sea coast without wasted driving. Day trips such as Tbilisi and Mtskheta — The Essential First Day or Kakheti Wine Country — Day Trip work well on short stopovers between flights, while Georgia in 7 Days — The Classic Grand Tour and Georgia in 10 Days — Tbilisi to Svaneti to the Sea suit a fuller Lunar New Year or summer holiday.
If this guide is part of a trip you are planning, our Georgia in 10 Days — Tbilisi to Svaneti to the Sea and Monasteries of Georgia — Mtskheta, the Thirteen Fathers and Kakheti in 3 Days cover the places it describes with a private guide and driver; a GTour travel expert adapts the route to your dates.
Practical summary
- Confirm current visa-free status and stay length for Hong Kong SAR passports on mfa.gov.ge before booking; apply through evisa.gov.ge only if told a visa is required.
- Expect a connection through Istanbul, Doha, Dubai or Munich; no direct Hong Kong–Georgia flight exists.
- Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your Hong Kong licence if you plan to rent a car.
- Carry a card plus some euros or US dollars in cash; Hong Kong dollars are not practical to exchange locally.
- Buy travel insurance that covers mountain and winter activities, and verify current insurance rules on evisa.gov.ge.
- Expect English in Tbilisi and Batumi, less so in villages; a guide helps once you leave the main routes.
- Vegetarian food is easy to find; halal is realistic mainly in Adjara and parts of Tbilisi, so check ahead.
- Ties between Georgia and Hong Kong are mainly recent and commercial, led by wine trade and small business links, not deep historical connection.
