For travellers combining Georgia with an East African safari, water safety is a small but decisive detail. Tap water quality across Kenya and Tanzania varies even at well-run lodges, where supplies may come from boreholes, rivers or municipal systems of uncertain purity. Pathogens such as E. coli, Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium and typhoid-causing Salmonella typhi can trigger symptoms within 24 to 72 hours, and travellers’ diarrhoea affects an estimated 20 to 50 percent of visitors to high-risk destinations, most often through food or water outside established camps.
The remedy is largely behavioural. Reputable camps supply bottled or filtered water for drinking and brushing teeth; ice should be avoided unless confirmed as treated, and salads in local restaurants carry more risk than cooked dishes. Self-peeled fruit such as bananas or oranges is safe, while pre-cut fruit is not. “The question I hear most at camp is: can I drink the water here? Always ask, never assume,” says Nikos Pocock, Head Guide and Co-founder of Africa Calling Safaris.
Travellers departing from Tbilisi or elsewhere in Europe should arrange a typhoid vaccination four to six weeks before departure, alongside standard safari health checks. Packing oral rehydration salts is recommended for every trip, as they manage dehydration more effectively than water alone; a short course of ciprofloxacin or azithromycin, discussed in advance with a travel clinic, can treat most cases within a day. Iodine or chlorine tablets handle bacteria but not Cryptosporidium reliably, making a UV-pen purifier a more complete backup for remote stretches of the journey.
