Travellers weighing a Kenyan safari against the familiar July–August rush might reconsider the calendar entirely. Kenya’s two rainy periods — the short rains of October–November and the long rains of April–May — turn the savannah emerald, thin out vehicle traffic at sightings, and coincide with peak bird numbers and newborn wildlife. In the Masai Mara, October rainfall averages 80–100mm, mostly in brief afternoon storms, leaving mornings clear for 4–5 hour game drives.
Data from Africa Calling Safaris shows clients travelling in October–November rated wildlife sightings at 4.3 out of 5, only slightly below the 4.5 recorded in peak season, yet gave value for money 4.7 against 3.9 — a gap that makes the trade-off easy to justify. Rates across camps and lodges typically drop 20–40%, and unlike the heavier long rains, October–November sees full camp availability rather than seasonal closures.
Beyond economics, the season favours photography: diffuse overcast light avoids harsh midday shadows, and storm-lit skies make for dramatic landscape shots. Predators remain highly active with cubs at dens, resident elephants gather at waterholes, and flamingo colonies at Lakes Nakuru and Bogoria are far less crowded. Travellers connecting from Tbilisi or other European hubs can typically reach Nairobi via one stopover, making a Caucasus-to-Kenya combination feasible within a single autumn trip.
Packing should include a waterproof jacket, protective bags for camera gear, and stronger insect repellent, as standing water increases mosquito activity during these wetter, quieter months.
