Georgia’s Roads Department closed the Pshaveli–Abano–Omalo road between the 22nd and 72nd kilometre markers on October 4, 2026, citing heavy snowfall and ice that made the route dangerous for all vehicle types.
The closed section includes the Abano Pass, the main route linking Georgia’s lowlands to the highland region of Tusheti. The first 22 kilometres, near the village of Pshaveli, remain open with normal traffic. The Abano Pass is considered one of the highest and most difficult roads in Georgia and typically closes for winter from late autumn until early summer, but this year’s closure came earlier than usual, suggesting winter conditions arrived ahead of schedule.
Travellers hoping to reach Omalo and other Tusheti villages by car cannot pass beyond km22 until conditions improve. Those currently in Tusheti are advised to contact local operators to confirm alternative routes out of the region.
What it means for travellers
Do not attempt to drive the Abano Pass while the closure is in effect. Anyone already in Tusheti should check with local tour operators or guesthouses about exit options, and travellers planning trips to Omalo or other Tusheti villages should monitor official road updates before departing.
