The only land route into Tusheti, the Pshaveli-Abano-Omalo road, has partly reopened following its seasonal closure, according to the relevant authorities. Traffic has resumed on the stretch between Lechura and Omalo, from km 12 to km 72, but only for high-clearance 4×4 vehicles.
The first section of the road, from Pshaveli to Lechura (km 1 to km 11), remains open to all vehicle types without restriction. Beyond Lechura, standard cars and minivans are still barred from continuing toward Omalo; only high-clearance vehicles are permitted on this stretch, which crosses the Abano Pass. The pass is known for steep, gravel sections and dangerous gradients, and typically operates only through summer and early autumn before winter conditions force a full closure.
No final closure date for the season has yet been announced. Authorities have warned that the pass can close without advance notice if weather conditions deteriorate.
What it means for travellers
Anyone planning to drive into Tusheti or Omalo must use a high-clearance 4×4 vehicle once past Lechura (km 11), as standard cars are not permitted beyond that point. Travellers should check current road conditions with a local driver or tour operator before departing, since the Abano Pass can close suddenly once weather worsens.
