Georgia’s State Department of Roads closed a section of the Pshaveli–Abano–Omalo road on October 4, 2026, between the 22nd and 72nd kilometer marks. The agency cited heavy snowfall and icy surface conditions that made the route unsafe for all vehicle types.
The closed section includes the Abano Pass, the main road connecting lowland Georgia to the mountainous Tusheti region. The first 22 kilometers, near the village of Pshaveli, remain open with normal traffic.
The Abano Pass is one of Georgia’s highest and most difficult roads, typically closing from late autumn until early summer. This year’s closure came earlier than usual, suggesting winter conditions arrived ahead of schedule. Travelers hoping to reach Omalo and other Tusheti villages by car cannot pass km22 until conditions improve.
Those currently in Tusheti are advised to contact local tour operators or hotels to arrange alternative routes out of the region.
What it means for travellers
Do not attempt to cross the Abano Pass while it is closed. Anyone already in Tusheti should coordinate departure plans with local operators or accommodations. Travelers planning trips to Omalo or other Tusheti villages should check official road updates before departure, as the pass is unlikely to reopen until next summer.
