Travellers heading from the Caucasus or Europe to East Africa for a photographic safari are often told that better equipment guarantees better pictures. Guides at Africa Calling Safaris in Nairobi argue otherwise: positioning at eye level with the subject, exposing for the animal rather than the backdrop, and using wide-area continuous autofocus matter more than any camera upgrade. A review of 3,200 client images submitted between 2022 and 2024 found that 67 percent of those rated excellent were shot within 90 minutes of sunrise or sunset, while only 8 percent came from the 10:00–15:00 window, despite that period accounting for 30 percent of drive time — making early starts, ideally in the vehicle by 06:30, roughly eight times more productive per hour than midday driving.
Composition advice follows similar logic. The rule of thirds, with a moving animal framed facing into open space, outperforms centred close-ups, which flatten context and scale. Guides point to a resting leopard in Kenya’s Masai Mara and cheetahs in Amboseli as examples where including grassland, sky or a foreground element turns a portrait into a scene with a sense of place.
“Composition and context make the difference between an image that records an animal and one that tells a story about a place,” said Nikos Pocock, Managing Director of Africa Calling Safaris.
Technical recommendations include negative exposure compensation in bright light, apertures of f/5.6–f/8 for isolating single subjects, f/8–f/11 for groups, and shutter speeds above 1/2000s for birds in flight, with RAW capture advised for later editing. Travellers planning a Caucasus-to-Africa itinerary should budget extra early mornings into the schedule, since light quality, not gear, determines results.
