Travellers heading to Kenya after a Caucasus itinerary face a packing puzzle unlike anything in Georgia: bush camps reached by light aircraft enforce a strict 15kg total luggage limit, soft-sided duffel bags only, while conditions swing from near-freezing predawn drives to fierce midday sun and smart camp dinners. Africa Calling Safaris, the Nairobi operator, says the answer is ruthless editing combined with a layering system rather than packing for every scenario separately.
The single non-negotiable rule is colour: khaki, olive, tan and grey only, with no white, no bright shades and no camouflage, which reads as military in East Africa and can cause problems at checkpoints. Neutral tones keep tsetse flies away, avoid unsettling wildlife and photograph better in the field. Operator data from 2018-2024 shows 31 percent of clients faced overweight charges in 2023, mostly because of banned hard-shell suitcases rather than genuine excess weight; a soft duffel reportedly prevents nine in ten baggage issues. A well-edited seven-night kit, camera gear included, typically weighs 10-12kg.
Recommended clothing includes several lightweight long-sleeved shirts, zip-off trousers, a fleece for mornings that can fall to 10°C in the Mara in July, a windproof layer, and one smart-casual outfit for upmarket lodges with dress codes. A broad-brimmed hat, sturdy light shoes rather than heavy boots, binoculars, a 200mm-plus camera lens and a UK-style three-pin adaptor round out the list.
Health preparation matters equally: malaria prophylaxis is advised below 2,500m, yellow fever certification is required from at-risk countries, and SPF50 sunscreen is essential given UV readings of 11-12 at midday. Travellers connecting from Europe or Tbilisi should book a travel health consultation four to six weeks ahead, since some antimalarials need a loading period before departure.
