- Plan to arrive by car, since the location is built around the Gombori Pass drive rather than a town setting.
- Treat it as a waypoint, not the day's sole destination — pair it with Telavi or Akhmeta on the same route.
- Expect home cooking and a family-run rural atmosphere rather than a formal restaurant experience.
About 50 kilometers east of Tbilisi, the road to Kakheti begins its climb into the Gombori range, the forested pass that has long linked the capital with Georgia’s wine country. Partway up this route lies Kochbaani, a small village where a family has spent the last five years restoring their grandmother’s house, garden and kitchen into Kochbaani House, a gastronomy venue built around home cooking and a quiet rural setting.
October suits this kind of stop well. The Gombori forests take on autumn colour at this time of year, the mountain air is cooler than the valley floor, and the drive itself becomes part of the appeal rather than just a means of getting somewhere. Unlike venues clustered in town centers such as Telavi or Sighnaghi, Kochbaani House sits directly on the pass road, making it a natural waypoint rather than a destination requiring a detour.
Who it suits
This is a stop for travelers with their own transport, since the location depends on the drive itself. Day-trippers heading out from Tbilisi for a single day in Kakheti, road travelers continuing on to Telavi or Akhmeta, and anyone with a particular interest in Georgian home cooking and rural hospitality will find it a sensible place to break the journey. It is less suited to those without a car or those looking for a dedicated restaurant district with multiple dining options nearby, since Kochbaani is a working village rather than a tourist hub.
The family’s description of the place emphasizes an escape from city noise and an authentic, warm atmosphere rather than a formal dining experience, and that framing is a useful guide for setting expectations. This is a household kitchen and garden brought back to life, not a restaurant complex.
Getting there is straightforward by car: follow the road out of Tbilisi toward Kakheti via the Gombori Pass, rather than the longer route through Sagarejo. The village of Kochbaani sits along this climb, before the road descends into the Alazani Valley and its better-known wine towns.
For a full day out, pair a stop here with onward travel into Telavi or Akhmeta, both within easy reach once you’ve crossed the pass. Combined with Kakheti’s vineyards and the valley views that open up on the descent, Kochbaani House works best as one stage in a longer loop through the region rather than a standalone trip.
