Traffic for high-clearance vehicles has been restored on the Lechuri–Omalo section (km12 to km72) of the Pshaveli–Abano–Omalo highway, the main route into the Tusheti region. Movement of all other vehicle types on this stretch remains prohibited.
The initial section of the road, from Pshaveli to Lechuri (km1 to km11), is open to all traffic without restriction.
The Pshaveli–Abano–Omalo road, which crosses the Abano Pass, is the sole vehicle access route to Tusheti and is notoriously difficult, with steep gravel sections and sharp drops. It is typically only passable during the summer and early autumn months before winter conditions close it entirely.
What it means for travellers
Visitors heading to Tusheti and the village of Omalo must use a 4×4 or other high-clearance vehicle for the Lechuri–Omalo section; standard cars and vans are not permitted beyond Lechuri. Travellers should check current conditions with a local driver or tour operator before departure, as the pass can close again quickly with changing weather.
