Tom, 41, and Emma, 39, travelled from Bristol to Kenya in January with daughters Mia, 8, and Iris, 5, booking through Nairobi-based specialist Africa Calling Safaris. Most Kenyan camps set a minimum age of six to eight for game drives, while some exclusive conservancies running walking safaris require children to be at least 12. Mia stayed engaged throughout every drive; Iris managed roughly 40 minutes before needing distraction — a pattern the operator says is typical, and one travellers from Europe or the Caucasus should weigh carefully when choosing flight connections and drive lengths for a first safari with small children.
Camp selection mattered most. The family used three properties — in the Masai Mara, Amboseli and Samburu — chosen specifically for family programmes, junior ranger activities lasting 60 to 90 minutes, and midday rest-period entertainment. Across Africa Calling’s records of more than 200 family groups between 2015 and 2024, 78% of children aged 6 to 12 named Amboseli’s elephants their trip highlight, ahead of lions (61%) and cheetahs (54%).
The appeal was clear at Amboseli, where breeding herds of 10 to 20 elephants, led by the oldest female, gather near water. Calves stand 85–90cm at birth and begin using their trunks to drink around three months old; the family watched one herd cross a dry riverbed for nearly an hour.
“A five-year-old who can sit quietly for forty minutes is ready for a safari,” said Nikos Pocock, Africa Calling’s managing director. Small gear, such as children’s own compact 8×21 binoculars, made a noticeable difference.
