- Carry complete documentation: return/onward tickets, proof of accommodation and sufficient funds, as border officers may request them.
- If refused entry, request consular assistance from your embassy immediately and ask for written reasons for the decision.
- Budget extra time at Georgian border points, as sudden refusals and detentions in holding areas have been reported.
A report has emerged describing an incident in which a group of French tourists were refused entry to Georgia and held in a windowless room at an international airport for two nights before being returned to their point of departure. The report does not specify the exact airport, date of travel or the stated grounds for refusal.
Entry refusals at Georgian border checkpoints, while uncommon, can occur when officers question the purpose of a visit, length of stay, financial means or previous travel history. Travellers who are turned away are typically held in a transit or holding area until a return flight is arranged, which can take more than one day depending on flight availability.
Georgian authorities have not issued a public statement responding to the specific case described in the report. Citizens of many countries, including France and other EU states, can normally enter Georgia visa-free for up to a year, but border officers retain discretion to deny entry on a case-by-case basis.
What it means for travellers
Travellers should carry proof of onward travel, accommodation bookings and sufficient funds when entering Georgia. If refused entry, request immediate contact with your country’s embassy or consulate and ask for a written explanation. Anyone facing an unusually long wait at a holding area should also request access to food, water and communication, and document the circumstances for any later complaint or appeal.
