The Roads Department of Georgia has temporarily closed a section of the Zugdidi-Jvari-Mestia-Lasdili highway between km177 and km178 due to a rockfall. The closure applies to all types of vehicles until the hazard is cleared.
The affected stretch lies on the main road connecting Zugdidi with Mestia, the gateway town to Svaneti, a popular destination known for its medieval towers and mountain trails. No reopening date has been announced; crews are expected to assess and clear the debris before traffic resumes.
Authorities have not specified an alternative route, so travellers heading to or from Mestia should check current conditions before departure.
What it means for travellers
Drivers heading to Mestia or Ushguli should check road status before setting out, as this is the only paved route into Svaneti.
Expect delays or possible detours; allow extra travel time and consult local transport operators for updates.
Marshrutka and shared taxi services between Zugdidi and Mestia may be temporarily suspended or rerouted.
