Travellers planning a safari in Kenya or Tanzania often arrive at a vaccination list that looks far longer than necessary. According to a review by Prof. Giorgi Pkhakadze of David Tvildiani Medical University in Tbilisi, only yellow fever carries a legal entry requirement, and only for visitors arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, covering most of sub-Saharan Africa and parts of South America. Travellers flying directly from Tbilisi, other parts of the Caucasus or Europe are generally exempt, though anyone routing through Uganda, Rwanda or border areas near the DRC should still be vaccinated and carry the yellow card.
Beyond that legal threshold, hepatitis A and typhoid are widely advised for any East Africa itinerary, alongside up-to-date tetanus, diphtheria and polio boosters. Hepatitis B, rabies and cholera vaccines are reserved for specific circumstances, such as walking safaris, remote camps far from medical care, or planned medical procedures abroad. Meningococcal vaccination applies mainly to the Sahel’s meningitis belt rather than to Masai Mara-style itineraries.
Industry data from pre-departure health checklists found that 42 percent of clients had not visited a travel clinic beforehand, and 18 percent did not realise their home country is classed as yellow fever-endemic by Kenyan authorities. Clinicians recommend booking a travel medicine appointment six to eight weeks before departure, since several vaccines require multiple spaced doses and the visit also allows a broader review of travel health needs.
