At the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli National Park combines volcanic plains, open grassland and a permanent swamp replenished by the mountain’s snowmelt. This mix of terrain supports one of East Africa’s richest wildlife habitats, with elephants at its centre. The Amboseli Elephant Research Project, started by Cynthia Moss in 1972, has followed individual animals and family units for more than fifty years, and many are still recognised by name by local guides and researchers.
Thanks to community conservation efforts and a sharp drop in poaching, the park’s elephant population has climbed from roughly 600 in the 1990s to more than 1,600 today. Beyond elephants, Amboseli is home to large lion prides, cheetah, hyena, buffalo and Maasai giraffe, while the swamp draws hippos and a wide range of waterbirds. The flat, open landscape makes it easier to watch predators hunt across long distances than in denser habitats.
The dry seasons, January–February and July–October, offer the best wildlife viewing as animals gather near water. Amboseli lies about five hours by road from Nairobi, or a 45-minute flight; travellers coming from Europe or the Caucasus typically connect through Nairobi before heading south. Many itineraries pair Amboseli with the Masai Mara, trading its mountain views and open space for the Mara’s denser predator populations. Guided village visits with nearby Maasai communities are also available.
